If you know how to drive in the snow its not a big problem. In this case the 100mph wind gusts are the concern, but if you stay off the open highways and on roads that are fairly well closed in on the sides by forests (just be wary of falling trees), hills, buildings or whatever then you'll have minimal wind concerns.

The freeway from Sacramento to Reno is I-80, and its what I would definitely consider an 'open highway'. There's really no good alternative unless you want to drive hundreds of extra miles. The bottleneck is at Donnor Summit.

I live in Rocklin, CA which is about 70 miles from Donner Summit. Today (Friday) we have had 75 MPH wind gusts, one of which blew apart the top half of the tree in my front yard. Dozens of trees in my immediate neighborhood are uprooted. Fences are down. Roads are flooded. Power is out in many places.

And the freeways are worse. On I-80 and I-5 there are overturned big rigs that are blocking the entire freeway.

All in all, its a good day to stay home around here!

This is the most powerful storm that I've seen in the 20 years that I have lived in Rocklin, and its not over yet.

When I said 'open highway', I meant that its large and wide and cars traveling on it would be affected by wind gusts.

Now it is closed to traffic and they don't know when it will re-open.

I was watching the tournament on TV and kept thinking "I wonder which of those people in the stands is Erin?" lol. I hope you made it home alright!

Yeah generally interstate highways are wide open with a lot of large open fields on either side. Not good for traveling with winds that high. The two major highways here, I-81 and I-90 are the same way and I wouldn't go within 400 yards (how far away my house is from I-81) of them during a storm like that.

I've actually never experienced a blizzard with 100mph winds, which is somewhat surprising considering where I live, in fact we haven't had a blizzard since 1993, 15 years ago. However on Labor Day in 1998 when I was 15 we got hit with a type of storm called a microburst. It had so much lightning you thought it was daytime out (the storm hit at like 11pm), winds reached 130mph or higher gusts, there was supposedly two tornados downtown, flooding, roofs got blown off the buildings at the state fairgrounds, power was out for up to two weeks, trees and powerlines down everywhere. And the whole time I was watching the storm with my face pressed against a big pane glass window with my friend and his parents in their living room. I actually saw a tree across the street standing during one lightning flash, there was like a 5 second break and in the next flash it was completely uprooted. It was fun!

It was great I was there all Saturday and Sunday for telecast and sat in front on the side bleachers. It was really cool to see the wholle approach from the side and better even I could count flare rings on the ball they were using. It was way AWESOME.....sidenote didnt bowl too bad either using my Twisted Fury even though it was 9pin no tap I bowled a 582 scratch felt pretty good.

Well we made it home! The going was a breeze. We left Thurs am and beat the storm. But by Friday the storm landed with a big kick. It was snowing like crazy in downtown Reno, restaurants closing early and busing not running etc.... It was fun for me, having grown up in areas where there was always snow, to be in snow fall again. We had a blast. Was tempted to do a few doughnuts in the nearly abandoned parking lots, but figured at 45 I'd grown out of that. Hah!

Sat. the pass was still bad, so they said. So we got the room for Sunday night too. Monday was a our only real good window and we just can't stay any longer. So we headed out this morning. But they did have chain requirements. After having to pay someone to put the chains on (I hadn't a clue) we headed off at a snail's pace with everyone else. But there was no snow! Sure snow off the road, but not on the road. I have no idea why they were requiring chains today. I know on Friday they had a 17 car pileup in the pass, but that was in the middle of the storm. This was a rip off and no one, no officials at all, there to make sure people did chain up. So valuable lesson learned there.....never chain up unless a police official is about to give you a ticket or turn you around. I've driving in so much worse that it was laughable.

Didn't see Tweety, though we worn our Fireside Pro Shop shirts. During the pro ams the stadium was packed so it wasn't surprising that we couldn't meet. At $80 a pop, the PBA must be making a ton of money off those pro ams. And then found out that the Pro Shop was out of 15lb balls by the time the second pro am started. So if you pre paid for the pro and the ball deal, I wonder now if you are going to have to pay for shipping to get that ball?

Bowling was great. We saw just about everyone you could think of during our 4 day stay. Some disappointments. Like Danny Wiseman bowling so bad on Sunday after bowling absolutely brilliantly on Saturday. But as usual the winner more then earned it and Tommy Jones bowled great.

By the way, does anyone know if and when they are replaying this? Being there, you didn't get to hear any of the telecast or lead ins. We were in the top stadium seating. Two people both wearing beigeish polos, next to the man with the Aloha sign.

Glad you made it back safely. Sounds harrowing. I have only been to Reno for Nationals and really don't know the surrounding area. But, getting stuck downtown would have been my preference. Probably never would have left the casinos.

I am sure there is a video poker game at Harrah's that has permanent imprints of my cheeks on the chair.

Erin,
Looks like it was shown this morning and again on the 13th - notice it's listed as the High Desert Classic, not constructionjobs.com
