I wonder what Randy Pedersen thinks of Rob. "What's a sleeper?" was the most memorable statement made by Rob on the last PBA stop. Commentating on the PBA tour was at its peak when Earl Anthony and Mike Durbin were behind the mike. The viewer at home could always count on learning something when those two were in charge.

I liked "What's a sleeper" (it was actually "what's dead wood", if I recall correctly). Lots of bowlers might not know. I think it's good when they discuss things that we take for granted, because 75% of the league I bowl in doesn't understand bowling. If you want a show that's just for people that know everything about bowling, you're going to have to do it yourself, because no one is going to pay for advertising that will get to 100 people.

I also liked how no one could tell him why it was called that, after all the [censored] he's taken on the Turkey/Hambone thing.

It was "what's a sleeper?" I'm actually surprised no one explained it to him, which either means no one knew (which is sad) or no one cared (even more sad). In essence, a sleeper is when two pins are lined up one behind the other (2-8 or 3-9) and the bowler on the approach makes the mistake of thinking he's only got a single pin spare since the 8 or 9 can be hard to see/blur together with the 2 or 3. So they go up with a more relaxed, nonchalant single pin mindset then they pick it up and realize there was another pin. The term is more of a reference to the mindset than the actual leave, as you go up with a "sleeper" mindset and make a mistake on an easy leave.

At least, that's how I always learned it. And "dead wood" is pins left on the deck that aren't moving.

Cgeorg: 90% of people in both my leagues don't understand bowling or bowling etiquette. I can't tell you how many times I've been on the approach getting set only to have someone on one of the pairs next to me pick their ball up, get in front of me and throw their shot.

I like listening to Rob Stone's commentary about as much as I like hearing fingernails on a chalkboard. Not only is he ignorant, but he's rather childish in his commentary. Honestly, I coached hyperactive junior bowlers that could do a better job.

But, who else is ESPN going to hire? No, I don't want Bo Burton back, either. He was too condescending back when he was on ABC (Bo, if you're still that good, get your butt out of the chair and make the show, ok?). Randy is pretty good, IMHO. At least he gives some insight that's useful. I can think of worse people to do his job, actually.

I don't think it's that difficult to ask a major sports network to find someone who doesn't act like a 10 year old picking on the fat kid on the playground to do commentary. Sure, us true fans of the sport are not going to quit watching because of some pea-brained moron, but I'd like to watch the show with the volume on at the very least, and the only things I want to hear rolling are bowling balls, not my eyeballs.

It was explained to him. What wasn't explained was the origin of the term.

I agree. I think he's added energy to the telecast and he asks the questions that I bet a LOT of once a week league bowlers are asking too. I don't think it's a bad idea to have him ask questions like that even if he already knows the answer. Then someone can answer it without sounding like they're talking down to the viewing audience.

I posted this before. Steve is the perfect compliment to Randy. He can play dumb, and ask the stupid questions. Randy can then answer them so all understand.

I must've not been in front of my TV when that happened. I was bouncing back and forth between my TV, kitchen and computer so missed it.
