While a steady and consistent prep routine works for me, I also find that if I'm obsessing too much, my timing (steps, pushoff, armswing, approach to the foul line and slide) are all off and I end up being off balance. When I stop thinking too much, things come much easier and smoother.

Thanks again to all for the excellent advice. Made some significant progress this week. Gave up some pinfall in the process by forcing the issue, but still shot 634 -- pretty good for me. More importantly, I felt much more comfortable, which was my goal. Concentrating on a pre-shot routine helped -- pushing the ball toward my target as my first move got me started consistently, with only a couple of false starts. Still a long way to go, but I made progress. I appreciate the help.

TBA, how did this result in lost pinfall? If you forced a start when you weren't ready, did you miss your target? Take that deep breadth.

Dennis: I threw a few shots when I wasn't quite focused on my target and it threw off my form. But it was more important to just go, which I did. The longer I set, the more likely I am to have problems with that first step. This is my first men's league in 20 years -- the mental part of the game is much more important than the last time I bowled. It's probably been a weakness and now it needs to be a strength. I hope I'm a quick learner. Thanks for the advice -- I think being relaxed in general would be a big help to my game. I've never been into yoga or meditation and I'm not a beer drinker. But I've been told any of the three would help.

Did you try doing your approach from all the way back in the setee area?

I got the yips in the second day of a 3 day clinic with lots of bowling left to go, Ron Clifton had me start my approach from the back of the settee area and after doing that a couple of times I was able to resume bowling normal again.
