I never paid much attention to this previously, but since the Monday night team I bowl with is in the thick of the race, the subject term came up for the night of 12-18. Just what is "position round"? Maybe it has a different terminology in other parts of the US, but what the heck does it mean? Thanks.

By the way, thanks for all the advice about moving up to a better ball I had inquired about earlier.

Position round is when 1st place plays 2nd place, 3rd place plays 4th place, etc.

I'm not totally sure on the reasoning for it, but that's how it works, instead of going by the normal "rotation schedule."

Usually position round determines a section winner. Like first 1/2 or first 1/3 winner. Then you go back to competition the next week. At the end of the year, you'll have another position round for the last section. And then the next week roll offs to determine the league champions. So at that point all the section winners roll off against each other.

In our area, that last week when the roll offs determine the league champions, we have Sweepers. Which is a little mini tournament amongst the league. This way all the teams are involved, not just the section winners.

We have a few position rounds scheduled through out the season and the 1/2 and 2nd half of the league ends with position round. It's a chance for #1 and #2 and so on down the line to battle it out head to head. Non position round weeks you rely on beating teams to stay in the race and hope the other team you're looking to beat has a bad night by someone else's hand.

As luck would have it we took 3 of 4 last week and now we face the 1st place team in a non position round meeting to gain some ground back. As of last weeek we were out by 4 points so the max can be 5 points we are out. I'd love to go in there and see that they had an off night last week and then we take it to them. Soon we have position round coming up so that's 8 points total in a few weeks time which should decide 1st place.
