Over here, there are bylaws that prohibit the team from having more than one team member as league officer, aswell as we canīt have family members as officers. Thatīs also for the benefit of the team, because it does ocur that the oficer is distracted from the game because of x or y problem and does not perform as well as he or she can. There is actualy no benefit fom having several players as oficers on one team, as the league president has only one vote, and the rest do not have one in our leagues, only the captains. The real decision makers in our leagues (specialy in our medical league) are the captains, the league oficers only make sure our rules and regulations are obeyed, they preside over our league meetings and keep record of them, and our treasurer is the guy that manages our money, and has to report every two to the president and captains the finances. All payments have to be signed by president, treasurer and secretary. and every desition has to be aproved as I said by majority of captains, so you see, it is a thankles job, and one that does not give you any advantage, in fact itīs detrimental to your game. I was league secretary for two years, and my average went down from 215 to 205, and last season I was named President and it went down 10 points more. Now that Iīn no longer involved Iīm to 215 again, so it does make a diference.
As for last minute changes, in our leagues, you canīt make last minute changes, you have to first register a player one week before he can start playing, and player transfers need the captain of the team that he is leavingīs aproval, then 2/3 of the rest of the captainīs aproval, so nobody can just make changes, not even oficers, as they are treated as common players that is they are ruled by the same rule book, no special favors.

luis,

I totally agree. My average hasn't recovered from the my secretarial duties. When I just bowl, I'm at least 10 pins higher because of the lack of distractions. The perk is when I bowl tournaments, I tend to do better.

The sport league I am secretary for, I don't even bowl--because that gives me 100% of my focus to the bowlers and the eventual issues.

I don't see where it matters how many officers are on one team.
Unless, they have a vote to divide the prize money amongst themselves.

I assume the officers of your leagues receive SOME compensation for their extra work.
At our meeting last year, it was questioned why the President got $100, when it was viewed that the Secretary and Treasurer do much more work for the same compensation. After discussion, it was decided by a league vote to increase the Treas and Secy to $150 each. But, since there was no more money in the budget, the Pres stipend was dropped. Don't think that was right, but I lost on the vote.

Doesn't the President have some liability if he acts on a rule violation that results in some disturbance? I think he should be paid for his risk.

The only officer here that is paid is the combined secretary/treasurer. It is not common for that person to even get postage, paper or printer expenses, merely a salary based per bowler ($10-15) per season.

Presidents, prize fund committees, the guy taking tapes in the sport league, all receive nada. That's what I mean by an often thankless job.

IIRC most leagues at my bowling center don't compensate any position except secretary (and maybe prez) which is the position that involves the most work. However, all league officers can bowl up to six games per day for free which is very nice compensation if you are a serious bowler. Also why there are so many candidates for league VP since it usually has all the perks for the least amount of work! LOL

You might be interested to know that this center is wall-to-wall leagues weekend nights and all day Saturday (and glow bowling). And all the competitive leagues have waiting lists for new teams. I just heard that the 8 open lanes on Friday nights (which had to be pre-booked a week in advance) are going away this fall since one of the social leagues expanded.....

Some bowling centers may have a perk program for oficers, I know in Vegas The Orleans Bowling center and the South Coast bowling center have them. Here, nobody gets paid, there is one perk, the presidents lineage is not charged, he is only charged for the prize fund, so if he pays the full night's dues, and at seasons end he has some money for the finals we hold in Vegas ( ofcourse, that's the perk the bowling center gives, oficers don't get paid as I said before). The President and the Treasurer do all the work, and the secretary just keeps track of meetings.

No perks like that anywhere around here. I could mention it, but I'd get laughed out of the buildings. smile

That one reason of going to League Meeting in begining because you elect the board memeber for the league.
