Does anyone play a variation of bowling that in the south we call "Tap Out" ? Basically its just like regular 10-Pin bowling, except that 9 pins on the first ball counts as a strike.

Its quite fun for bowling in less serious more social type situation.

We call it 9 Pin No Tap here. And there are unsanctioned leagues of it. It can be benificial to a bowler that wants to perfect their pocket entry angle.

But BEWARE it can also cost you valuable practise at your corner pin spares.

We also have 8 Pin No Tap.

Again its a score oriented game. Leads you to an inflated perception of your ability unless you keep it in proper perspective of studying pocket entry angles.

On Long Island, the Pro-Am is in a no tap format and there is an occasional no-tap tournament run as well.

Often we spend so much time with the older kids on sport shots and other ways that de-emphasize high scores, that when the kids start stringing strikes on a house shot, I can see them tightening up.

No tap is not "real" bowling, but it does help the kids to mentally prepare for 6-7-8-9 strikes in a row--as long as they're preparing in other ways as well.

My daughter and I bowled in the Pro-Am at Babylon Bowl this past spring in the no tap format.
No tap, so what does she do?? 1st game - 268, 2nd game 10 pin in first, then the next 11 for REAL. then the next 3 in the 3rd game. Fourteen REAL strikes in a row.
I would have to agree that the no tap format definitely takes the pressure off young bowlers.

I did 9-pin no tap for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It was run as a doubles tournament. It's pretty fun and it does give you some good practice on your pocket shot. I had a few bad shots in the first 2 games, but had a great 3rd game. I shot 219-222-263 for a 704. The last game, I started out with the first 7, then left the 3-6-10 in the 8th. I chopped the 3 and opened that frame. I struck out in the 9th and 10th. The 8th frame cost me a no-tap 300. Doing it again this week though. Maybe I can get it this time.

I got it!!! Did 9-pin no tap again last night. Shot 232-263-300 for a 795 series. One the no-tap 300, I had a 4 pin in the 5th and 2 10 pins in the 10th. 11 of my 12 shots were dead in the pocket and I lucked out when 1 went Brooklyn. It's been some real good practice for my pocket shot.

Wow this is an old topic I'm posting in!

We used to do no-tap tournaments in my junior Saturday morning league when I was growing up. I had 2 no tap 300's sandwiched between my 2 real 300's, but on both no tappers I kept realizing that they weren't "real" so I never felt the kind of pressure and anxiety I did for my real ones. Though for someone who's never rolled a real one, I agree that no-tap would help prepare them for long strings of strikes as long as they keep in mind that throwing a no-tap 300 requires accuracy and consistancy just like real ones.
