I bowled a small house tournament today, not much money at stake, mostly for bragging rights. I made the cut to the semis. We were put into groups of four per pair of lanes and we got 2 balls per lane for warm up. I was slow joining them and one guy started mouthing off about I had to be in the rotation with them. I politely answered that I'll be there, you guys keep warming up. He then started mouthing off that I had to join the rotation and it didn't make sense that I didn't immediately join them. I indicated we all got 4 balls and it made no difference whether I was part of their rotation. It got a bit heated between myself and the guy.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why someone would get so serious at a fun tournament. We were not bowling head to head so mind games at that point made no sense. It ruined my mood during the match.

Thoughts?

Been there, done that.

I would have been nose to nose. That did happen to me once.
There is no rule about practice rotation. Who's joint is he pulling?

Bowled once on lane 15. When practice started, I rolled on 16. Another bowler said I was not allowed to do that because it was his lane. WTH??

We are given 3 minutes to complete 4 tosses. This guy just pulled it out of his [email protected]#$ that we had to be in a rotation.

He's talking thru his [censored].

But, 2 rolls on each lane is a luxury. Most only get 1 roll. Kinda hard to read lanes, change lines or balls.

In an Association tourney here a few years ago. I sat in second after Singles and Doubles for all around. Moved to another set of lanes for team and got NO practice shots. The lanes had been used and fried. And, the hour wait between didn't help.

Dropped out of the top 10. Took me 4 frames to make adjustments and ball change too, in game 1. And, still never acclimated thru the next 2 games.

I should add, we bowled on the Scorpion for singles and doubles and a house shot for team.

Bowlers are a strange group.

There's an awful lot of people who love to help, offer advice, and get you improving/through a slump/etc

But there's also an awful lot of people who are very dramatic about it.

I've been in two situations like that where I thought it was about to go to blows. One of them was a weekly 9 pin no tap, where the winner stood to get $40.

For some people, nothing is too little to cause a scene over.

The good news is they're less common than the good people who truly want to see you succeed and have fun.

It's far worse than ever, and it's not just bowling. Being around people with steel eyed glares freaks me out now. People are just getting
very weird in general nowadays.

You see people doing that on those TV pokers shows. A lot of those card guys have big egos so I can understand them being a_holes. But low stakes bowling? Sheesh!

They were cutting the field from 30 to 15 for match play. Call me a poor sport but I was so happy that he didn't make the cut. But then again, he did screw up my game so sportsmanship was already out the door.

I don't bowl well angry.

In bowling, some people fuel their performances with negativity. I have seen it work. The real problem with this method is that you cannot do well until something bad happens. I have also seen it backfire. Mr. Negative picks on someone, and that person becomes MORE focused, and whups him.

In poker, all that chit chat and jibing is an attempt to gain information for future use. Egos are involved, for sure, but try not reading a whole lot into it. Have fun! It really [bothers] off Mr. Negative. LoL

The best way to deal with negative people is to use their negativity against them. If their negativity is a weakness, feed into it until they're so devastated, they would rather be silent. My favorite is to pick apart their delivery or pin carry. If their negativity is their strength, then turn it into a weakness. Feel sorry for them and make sure they believe you. Always do it with a smile and kindness, as if you really are concerned. Then rip their heart out on the lanes :-)

Of course, if by taking 'them' apart mentally takes you out of your game, then just ignore them. Usually, if you know what you're doing, it's easy to justify the means. You'll know how successful you've been by how they bowl and what they're like the next time you compete.

I applaud everyone's good shots. I'm happy when anyone, even my competitors shoot high scores. I just want them to know if they make a single mistake, it could be lights out.

One of my favorite quotes is from Marcus Aurelius and it goes like this; “If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.”

Oh....and some folks are just dix regardless of the situation. Bowling, poker, going to the post office, getting gasoline. It is just their natural bent. BUT I do not have to deal with those types more than once...
