We know in advance for most of our college matches, but as others have mentioned our home house compared to where the match is being held is usually different and I imagine the condition of the oil machine itself plays a big roll. Knowing how a pattern should play and how it actually plays are usually two different things.
The advantage again like others have mentioned is having an idea what equipment to take but I still just watch my ball go through it phases as it goes down the lane to figure out my best opportunity to score.

Here's an idea. Every Friday night, USBC announces the 'pattern of the week' that everyone across the nation must shoot on in the coming week. Everyone would know what to expect, but only for 1 week :-)

Hey folks! This can lead to a cheating and unfair if the hosting team does the oiling. They can announce the oil chart but they don't do exactly what they say. This could be a disaster to other bowlers. I think this is an element which cause bowling not being considered as a sports.
