I'm getting set for Nationals this year, and I just realized, one of the balls I was planning on taking, no longer has a serial number. Its got more games than I can count, and its been resurfaced twice. Most of the labels are there, but the serial number is gone.

Is this ball still legal for use or will they disallow it in El Paso? Thanks for any help.

The following I copy/pasted directly from the rules that can be found on the Nationals web site. So yes the ball is not legal for the tournament. Now if you had recorded the serial number you could have it re-engraved and it should be legal.

BOWLING BALLS — Every bowler must have a bowling ball and shoes for his/her
exclusive use. Each entrant will be allowed a maximum of eight bowling balls. Only
USBC approved bowling balls will be allowed and MUST have the manufacturer’s
name, product name and serial number clearly visible at all times for identification
purposes. Balls and drilling must meet all USBC specifications. All bowling balls may
be checked for compliance with USBC Equipment Specifications.

I also was looking at the USBC Equipment Manual found at bowl.com and it also states the serial number has to be on the ball to be used in competition.

The original number (if you know it...you do keep track in a spreadsheet like I do don't you?) can be re-inscribed on the ball and you should be fine.

good post, Cal. However, I used a spare ball that pre dates the USBC. And, it was accepted at nationals.

Dennis, there probably was something in the rules that I didn't notice that this rule pertains to balls made and approved by USBC as a picture showing what the serial number looks like including the USBC logo being stamped on there, and that those balls produced and prior to the merger were exempt.

I think you can just inscribe a / any number on the ball and it now has a serial number.

Thanks for the info and the ideas fellas. I somehow happen to still have the original box. I'll have the number put on it and see what happens.
