One of the first of the "usual suspect" teams, Junior Team USA Support 1 (Mansfield, TX), posted games of 1,070, 1,093, and 1,196 tonight to take the lead in Regular Team with a 3,359 total. Erik Vermilyea (Las Vegas, NV) led the way with a 762 set, while the group also included defending Regular All-Events champion Anthony LaCaze, who posted a 631; LaCaze now has a chance to be just the second bowler to win titles in three consecutive years, having also previously won Team All-Events two years ago (Les Zikes is the only bowler to do that to date).

Let's discuss the Vermilyea group. What are your opinions? Do they hold on for two eagles, one, or none?

Any Eagle this year makes LaCaze almost a certain lock for the USBC Hall of Fame when he's eligible, and should they hold on for both team titles, the whole group would probably find their way into the hall eventually. Three eagles seems to be the entry standard, not to mention, they all have Team USA/Junior Team USA experience.

What an exciting group to be watching. What are your thoughts?

After helping their Motion Plus Lanes team into the top 10 last night on BowlTV, Jeff Nimke (Oshkosh, WI) and Chad Maas (Waukesha, WI) found individual success today, with Nimke bowling the second 300 game of the tournament in his doubles event, and Maas adding 727 doubles and 746 singles sets to his 679 in team to take the Regular All-Events lead with 2,152. The group's run of close calls at the Open include second place in Regular Team last year and 6th and 9th place finishes in Team All-Events in 2011 and 2013, respectively.

Scott Cable (48, R, Elk River, MN) thought he'd have to shoot a lot of spares this year, but found a way around that last night by throwing 27 strikes, including 12 of them in the third game for the third 300 of the tournament and the first in the team event.
