One of these days, I might become a donor, errr, participant smile

I'm bowling in my very first real tournament this weekend, and I had no idea what the format was or how to choose days. Singles at 9"00 AM and doubles at 10:15.

I think my Crux will be getting plenty of use.

With two weekends in the books, here are the early leaders:

Regular Division

Team: The Cutting Edge (Windsor, CO) 3,032
Doubles: Doug McHugh & Bo Johnson (Huron, SD) 1,298
Singles: Brandon Nelson (Fargo, ND) 712
All-Events: Terrance Reeves III (Winter Haven, FL) 1,978

I'll skip the Classified division for now b/c the doubles leaderboard for that division doesn't seem to be available.

I had a chance to bowl on a flatter pattern and it was not easy. Although not Open specs, it was enough to give me a rough idea on what to expect.

I do believe that I will need a grippier ball, what I have slides too much. Accuracy is definitely going to be key as there is very little margin for error. If you miss outside, your ball won't come back. Tug the ball, don't expect it to go Brooklyn, it'll just slide into the head pin for a split.

For those who hang their ball on the 1 board for the 10 pin, it's going to be tough. The ball slides off the edge very easily.

As soon as I find a house with the Open pattern, I will give it a try.

The original "Mr. 900", Jeremy Sonnenfeld, who was a member of the winning Team All-Events team in 2001, found his way back on the leaderboard at the Open by posting a 698 series with his new partner, Tom Woodworth, adding a 674 to take the Regular Doubles lead with a 1,372 effort. Both bowlers are from Sioux Falls, SD.

Here are the early Classified division leaders:

Team: Lani Ohana (Kaneohe, HI) 2,532
Doubles: Sharon Nelson (Mesa, AZ) & Missy Price (Harrisburg, SD) 1,100
Singles: Marrk Bearman (Webster, SD) 601
All-Events: Joseph S. Whittaker (Provo, UT) 1,660

Make sure to find out if they re-oil as it will matter a lot. I joined my first county trio the past two weekends (one on fresh oil and the other on second set) and they were as different as day and night. Good luck Steve!

The members of Rails Bar and grill (Eagle Grove, IA) have been together for five years, and the teamwork they've developed paid off Wednesday night with games of 921, 897, and 779 for a 2,597 total and the Classified Team lead. Darrell Pedersen led the team with a 567 set.

Tyler Jensen (31, R, Ft. Worth, TX) has now seen his name atop a USBC Open leaderboard in consecutive years, as his 598 team, 707 doubles, and 676 singles sets have given him the Regular All-Events lead with a 1,981 total. His Storm Products team held the Regular Team lead for part of last year's tournament in Reno.

Chris Pounders (34, R, Madison, WI) and Ken Duffield (45, R, Platteville, WI), have shared Open success in the past, having held the Regular Doubles lead for part of the 2007 edition, but both are now individual leaders, with Pounders posting 691 in team, 676 in doubles, and 641 in singles to take the Regular All-Events lead with 2,008, and Duffield the Regular Singles lead with 739 after games of 267, 245, and 227. Their team, Team Dirty of Evansville, WI, also now leads Team All-Events with 9,055.

No sooner did Ken Duffield take the Regular Singles lead than Mike Pelham (36, R, Clinton, IA) returned from an 18 year hiatus from the Open Championships to post games of 266, 244, and 238 and move into the lead with 748 this afternoon.

Chad Oachs (39, R, Mankato, MN) has battled injuries, including a back problem he suffered in his team event, but rallied in singles to post games of 300, 253, and 219 for a 772 singles performance, good for not only the Regular Singles lead, but also the first perfect game of the 2015 tournament. The page linked above has the video of the last three strikes of the 300.
