I usually start a thread on the Open Championships with the lane conditions, but the USBC has released the streaming schedule for both the Open and Women's Championships. They had a poll on who would be featured for one of the streaming events, and 900 shooter Earon Vollmar won that poll; as a result, he'll be featured in his team event on May 28. Other than defending champions, other notable streaming events will be the team event of Jeff Richgels' 11thFrame.com team (May 15) and Mike Scroggins' all-lefty teams (Team event on June 23). Of course, BowlTV may add bonus coverage later, and that's actually how I got to see Alex Aguiar in his team event last year.

There's some really good coverage there (as usual.) Every year I enjoy these live streams more than any other bowling out there, including the PBA. I personally think of an Eagle as the most prestigious thing you can win (alongside maybe a WTBA medal) and I love watching the top talent go out there and put it on the line.

I'll really be looking forward to Matt McNiel and the Linds Lakers (billed as USBC HOF inductee Sam Lantto) Buddies Pro Shop, and Pollard's Bowl (the team that set the long standing team record of 3537 that's been obliterated these last two years.)

I'll personally be making the short trek from Tucson to El Paso to bowl on April 7th and 8th. This will be my second appearance. I shot 602 and cashed in singles last year as my tournament highlight. This year I'd like to improve on that performance. I've been bowling on a lot of more challenging patterns since last year, and right now I'm on a bit of a hot streak...I hope it lasts a couple more months at least.

Who else is bowling this year?

I got convinced to bowl El Paso. I have no idea what to expect, I just hope to keep my ball on the lanes. I am in the market for a heavy oil ball just for this tourney as I was warned about long oil patterns.

not long oil, flatter oil
much tougher than general house shot
needs accuracy and good fundamentals to succeed
a fun tournament though, its an experience for sure

Dave is right on the money. Its a pretty big misconception that Nationals=heavy oil. The last several years, the volume has been pretty mild, and the lengths have been medium. And with how often the lanes are full stripped, the backends are pretty sharp.

Take equipment that is smooth rolling, try to play straight as a team to start, and work on your spare game before going, and you'll find the most success.

That shouldn't be a problem as all of my balls are drilled fairly mild, thanks to my league being based in a "hookers" paradise house. As an old school bowler, I still use the 3-6-9 method of spare shooting which more or less works for me but is somewhat challenging over various patterns.

Champ is right on the money
best thing you can do to prepare for nationals is to practice, practice, practice your spares
learn to throw all single pins straight, no matter where they are on the lanes.
I throw at all of my spares with a plastic straight ball unless double wood

the patterns used at Nationals have very little miss room, a few boards either way of your target can cause you to miss the headpin all together.
just go knowing its going to a bit tougher than normal and plan on some site seeing, good food, good fun depending how long you can stay in town

I hear you Champ. Going straight at pins for spares definitely keeps it simple without worrying about hook.

The pattern announcement makes it all the more real. My trip is just around the corner.

Both patterns look pretty similar to me, with the team pattern just being flatter. Looks to me like they are trying to re-establish team play in the team event this year by taking the shape out of the front of the pattern.

We'll see what the real experts have to say in the next few days.
