Starting the new world championships thread off with the USBC's announcement of the six-man squad for the tournament: Chris Barnes, Mike Fagan, Tommy Jones, Marshall Kent, Bill O'Neill, and Sean Rash; all six are PBA members.

The official tournament site is up here, and, according to Bulletin 2, Marios Nicolaides, who was the technical delegate for last year's combined world championships and is serving in that capacity again, has selected the medium and long pattern categories for the tournament. The schedule for the tournament in the bulletin also provides the usage of the patterns in the events except for the Masters, where each lane of a pair will be dressed each pattern (medium on one lane, long on the other). Of course, the higher seed in the medal round in trios and team will have their choice of pattern.

You're free to browse http://www.worldbowling.org/events/championships/participants/?id=34 but some of the international notables at this World Men's Championships include Jason Belmonte, Dom Barrett, Stu Williams, Dan MacLelland, Osku Palermaa, Martin Larsson, Andres Gomez, and Choi Bok-Eum (from Korea, who, while he's not well-known in the USA, is always a threat at a World Championships). I didn't see Venezuela entered at this time, but, if they do, you can also expect to see Amleto Monacelli.

Tommy Jones leads after three of four squads of singles on the first day of the world championships, averaging 239 over his six games. Martin Larsen of Sweden holds down second, and Glenn Morden Pederson of Norway and Japan's Shogo Wada round out the top four. The top four after tomorrow's squad will advance to the medal round.

The 38' Atlanta and 43' Tokyo patterns are being used for the tournament, with singles being contested on the latter pattern.

I look forward to watching some of these matches live, later in the week. Looks like at least the medal rounds for trios, team and masters will all be on at reasonable hours out here in the west.

I won't route against ole Team USA, but Martin Larsen is one of my favorite international bowlers, and I'd love to see him win a big medal tomorrow in Singles.

Singles results

Gold: Dan MacLelland (CAN)
Silver: Shaker Al Hassan (UAE)
Bronze: Tommy Jones (USA), Sam Cooley (AUS)

Tommy Jones was the high qualifier, but, in his semifinal match against Dan MacLelland, he didn't get comfortable on the right lane (opening in the 3rd) until late and MacLelland rolled to a 269-236 win. In the gold medal match, MacLelland shut the door on Shaker after Shaker missed a 10 (lefty). It was still the best medal ever won by a bowler from the UAE at a world championships.

Standings after singles

Giving the singles qualifying standings b/c they represent the all-events standings after one event. Chris Barnes is the only American other than Tommy Jones in the top 24, and Martin Larsen (SWE), Stu Williams (ENG), Andres Gomez (COL), Choi Bokeum (KOR), and Jason Belmonte (AUS) are the other international notables in the top 24.

Doubles gets underway tomorrow.

Meant to mention that the USBC will have all qualifying squads and all medal rounds streaming live on BowlTV.

A pair of Finnish lefties, Kimmo Lehtonen and Joonas Jehkinen, were the doubles leaders after the first day squads, with Japan's Daisuke Yoshida and Shusaku Asato just four pins behind them in second. The last squad was getting underway at the time of this posting, with the medal round following at about 4:30 AM Tuesday EST.

Doubles results

Gold: Choi Bokeum & Park Jongwoo (KOR)
Silver: Daisuke Yoshida & Shusaku Asato (JAP)
Bronze: Shin Seunghyeon & Kang Heewon (KOR), Kimmo Lehtonen & Joonas Jehkinen (FIN)

The gold medal match was exciting, with the match coming down to the anchor bowlers and Park Jongwoo throwing the clinching strike on a strike in the 9th. Lefties generally did well in doubles, as all four medalists had at least one lefty.

All-events standings after doubles

Tommy Jones and Mike Fagan are the only Americans in the top 24 in all-events after doubles; Chris Barnes sits just outside the top 24 in 27th.

The first day of trios starts around Midnight EST.

The Danish trio of Frederik Nicolai Ohrgaard, Carsten Warming Hansen and Thomas Larsen threatened to set a trios record in the world championships after the first game, but, failing that, still separated themselves from the field to take the lead after the first day over Dan MacLelland's Canadian team. Sweden was third, and Americans Mike Fagan, Marshall Kent, and Sean Rash were fourth.
