OK, so I have been away for a long time. I was told, Thursday night in my league that a lot of people have dropped to 14 lb balls because the new balls finish in the pocket harder. Is this true?

I can't say that's 100% true. I can tell you that I'm currently throwing 14lb because of a wrist injury. I'm a speed dominant player so I was worried about pushing the ball through the break point, with a drop in weight (down from 15lb).

It took a few weeks to get my speed back up to pre injury form. I'm currently throwing 17.2-17.5 (pre-injury sweet spot) but have noticed an increase in revs and control. So for me, the 14lb hits just as hard as a 15lb, with some added control.

I also know 3-4 guys that avg 220+ (house shot) and have made the transition from 15lb down to 14lb.

If you're interested in trying 14lb, maybe you can get a deal on a used ball. Before dropping $150+ on a new one.

Great article. It really sounds like the 14 lb ball may be a good option for me.

Not true for all bowlers and not all balls. Too many factors determine how a ball hits the pins.

Article Champ posted even states this: Today's 14 pound balls can actually carry the pins better, for some people, than 15 and 16 pound balls. Good article but mostly stresses the PROS to going to 14lb.

Style of play plays a big part in using 14 lb equipment.
I have a team mate that bowls real well with 14lb equipment. He is also a Cranker and can get the Revs on the ball. 14lb fits his game. For him the statement would be true.

If you do go to 14 lb I would hold on to your 15lb stuff. Who knows you may end up going back to 15. But Good Luck on the change.

I've moved from 15 up to 16 and have no plans to move back down. I do have a 15 and tend to throw it harder while the 16 keeps me aware of not "chucking" the ball. . . I can roll it and let it do the work.

I made moves from 16 to 15 then back to 16 and now throw a combination of both 15 and 16 with success. I use 16 on heavier oil volumes and 15 when I have enough friction on the lane to get the desired ball motion.

One observation a higher entry angle is needed when throwing my 15s compared to 16s for good carry.

+1

The one nice thing to be said for 15lbs is most pro shops carry 15lbs in stock so if you did want a new ball there would be no waiting. I am not sure but they would be more likely to have the 14lb equipment in stock as well but I would imagine a little less likely than 15.

I have a combo of 15 and 16#. I found that with weaker cover eqpt the 16s work better for power and carry. plus if I warm up with te 16s I dont notice the weight difference. my spare ball is 16 hard rubber so I am always throwing 16.

if I switch to a 15 off the 16 everything is more solid and I can get a little stronger thru the ball.

my baseline ball is 16 with a medium cover.
