I was able to get on a team in the local 615 scratch sport shot league. We will see two patterns, Shark and Viper. We start with Shark next week. One guy said Shark is 44 feet. Another said it's been stretched to 47 feet.

My bother was kind enough to give me a original Virtual Gravity ball. He said it was set up for sport patterns. I left the finger placement alone and had the thumb plugged and drilled to match my span and size. I tried this ball on a fresh house shot that is known for having more oil than normal in the middle. It worked pretty good in the first game as long as I threw it properly but the flip/hook became a bit much as the lanes broke down. I stayed with it too long. I ended game 3 with 6 strike string and a nine count after switching to the Mission X.

Is this Virtual Gravity the correct ball for the Shark pattern and do you guys think I'll be able to stay with it for three games? Oh yeah, should I start throwing this up the 8 board?

One more question. Should I rough this ball up to a 500 or 1000 finish?

Going to do a Sport this summer also. I can't answer your specific questions but can post some videos that will give you advice on how to play the 2 patterns depending on the type of bowler you are.

Shark is 43 feet. Scorpion is the pattern that got lengthened to 47. Viper also got extended from 37 to 39 feet.

The links that Boss provided are a good place to start. Here is another one: http://www.epicbowling.com/pba-patterns/. There is some good advice for all styles but you'll have to account for the additional 2 feet on the Viper Pattern.

Would like to know if those videos were updated to the new length of the pattern? Or are they the same from the old length?

That's a significant growth on the Scorpion.

if i have a choice i like to start with 320 or 500 on most sport shots with my most aggressive or medium aggressive ball on the longer patterns. ususally i dont have to change it.

remember longer patterns dont necessarily mean high volume. you need to know the volume of oil and the lane surface to know the way they will typically play. harder lane surface and high volume oil patterns will play long due to the low friction (unless they are old lane surfaces). softer lane surfaces and high volume will play a little shorter.

this all given that nobody has played the lanes. watch where most players are playing them. i learned the hard way it's not always wise to stay away from the lane play traffic. the quality of bowlers on the lanes playing a similar area will open up that area of the lane sooner than not. if they are high-rev players, just play right of their shot if you are not high rev. if lower rev players mostly on the lanes then play around them depending on your rev rate/rpm.

Videos are from Bowl.com. I didn't know they changed the lengths. This is confusing decision to change the patterns and keep the same name. It would be better to leave the existing patterns as the are and create a new name for the new patterns. I plan on bowling in a sport league this summer. Going to be a real challenge with the new changes.

From Bowl.com
http://usbcongress.http.internapcdn.net/usbcongress/bowl/sportbowling/pdfs/PBA_Exp_Pattern_Flyer.pdf

From PBA.com
PBA Tour Viper
Length: 39'
A viper strikes with multiple angles of attack. This pattern will challenge players to attack the pins from multiple angles in order to score well.

PBA Tour Scorpion
Length: 47'
A scorpion is dangerous and unpredictable, like this pattern. If you can't find the right groove on the lanes, you'll be stung!

PBA Tour Chameleon
Length: 43'
Chameleons change color to outsmart their enemies. To excel on this pattern, bowlers must be versatile in many styles of play.

Video # 1 for both balls was created in Sept 2012. Video #2 for both balls was created in Nov 2008

That's good advice. Thanks. I have a decent rev rate but it's more of a side roll. I can slow the speed way down and maintain the revs. I'll play it straight as possible.
