I know that a hook would be the best solution, But I only have a plastic ball, and I can only toss it straight.

The people I bowl with have often commented on just how straight Im able to throw it.

So my question is, is there a better starting point for me on my first shot?

Im a right hander.
I start with my left foot on the center dot, and throw between the third and center mark, for my strike ball. If Im right on the money I get a strike, if not I will leave the five, seven or ten.

F.Y.I. for spares, I line up my left foot one dot to the left, of the mark that lines up with the pin Im after.

I.E. five pin I start with my left foot one dot left of center, and throw over the center mark.

For the seven or ten I go to the opposite side and throw over the second mark from that side.

I.E. for the seven, I start on the far right, and toss over the second mark.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you are going to throw the ball with no hook your best angle will be what is considered "coming off the corner." As a right handed bowler that usually means moving to the far right and releasing the ball near the gutter but angled toward the 1-3 pocket. This will require learning how to change the angle of your body/release since you currently used to throwing straight up the lane.

This is exactly correct.

From your explanation, you are rolling straight into the pocket. But, as you say you leave 5 pins, that indicates deflection.

Remember, your strike ball has to take out the 5 pin. So, your angle and targeting has to be to accomplish that. And, it's not from a straight shot.

Off the corner versus straight up 17 board will give you about 1.5 degrees additional entry angle. For more info, see here.

This works so well, it should be illegal

I started two years ago, with a once a month league, I picked up a cheep plastic ball, because I couldnt find a house ball to fit my hand, or were to heavy to toss all night.
So for the last year Ive been working on sending it straight and accurate.
But was getting disappointed with may scores,
I tried different angels and moved the marks around just as all the experts recommend, but nothing was making much of a difference.
Jan - March 18 games 128 a/High 183
March-April 17 games 139 a/High 203

Started UFO last three games
Last Game 151a/High 176

WOW!

Im still working on getting it down, but so far the results are amazing.
For me, simply going for the middle is the best way to play the helicopter style.
Even when the ball hits Brooklyn, the reversal of direction allows even more ball and pin deflection with a higher chance of messenger strikes.
I use a wrist device, and stay behind the ball during the release in a conscious effort. Using forearm not wrist.
I use a conventional grip, not a fingertip.
The biggest advantage is the ability to get the ball through the front (head) portion of the lanes without resorting to a lot of speed. However, a spinner is a bit harder to control because your fingers are not directly behind the ball during the release.
Basically, when it leaves your hand you know if it's a strike or not.
Im not master this technique, but believe me when I say that I love it.

When I have to change my angle, I am confused about the imaginary line. Sometimes l angle my body too much and l gutter or my angle is not enough and my ball misses the pin. Will the imaginary line help with getting my angles right? I have trouble imagining the line.

Pam, are you talking about the imaginary line from your target back to you?
You should always walk toward your target, and your shoulders perpendicular to the imaginary line.

In this manner, you avoid an upper torso turn and keep your body in line with your steps. Upper turning also turns the swing plane of your arm. So you may face your target, but your arm is aiming at the gutter.

Your explanation in the second paragraph sounds like what I am doing. If I am turning my torso then my swing does change. Keeping my shoulders squared to my target is something I have to keep in mind. The imaginary line from the target to my shoulder and walking that line is what I need to comprehend.

Thanks for your response.
