I'm curious if anyone has any experience with any of the software or apps available out there. I want to introduce video instruction to my coaching of the kids. I have a good video camera already. I will probably need to either upgrade my laptop, buy another laptop, or get an iPad. If I go the route of buying a newer laptop, then I will be spending another $250 or so on a video analysis software specific to bowling. If I go the iPad route ( leaning that way, more mobile ), the app is only $5.00 on top of the cost of the iPad. The minus is that the app isn't bowling specific so I lose the ability to easily calculate rev rate and ball speed. I know there is another app for ball speed.

I checked out Motion View and Motion Pro. Bowlers Map and Dartfish are a bit too expensive. Not interested in spending thousands of dollars. The cost of everything has to be around $800 or less. That's my budget.

What's your opinion.

So far I've only worked with Kniovea (the freeware for the PC) and it was an okay tool, which left me wanting more.

I arrived at exactly the same conclusion you did.
So far my favorite is "Motion Pro" since it has the better tools for bowling as far as I can tell (Rev rate, speed, tilt) and is upgraded regularly specifically for bowling thanks to Norm Duke smile

If this thread will not show any other gems, I'll probably go with MP

Edit: Just found out, that the RPM and Tilt tool only is integrated in the most expensive version of MotionPro. Thats not what I was looking for. Basically makes this whole post obsolete frown

The $129.99 version is great, and some pretty nifty advanced tools for $250

I might get this. Thankfully, they have a Mac version.
Note: The price includes Two licenses, nice touch.

Based on this thread I checked out the MotionPro software. I liked what I see. I have been using a digital camera placed on a table in the seating area to record my sessions. This is sorely lacking because I can't really place it in the correct spot to get the good angles. (Like sk8short01 and others produce)

Where does the camera need to be placed to get good angles and are you guys using a tri-pod for this?

I have always used a tripod when using the video camera. It's usually best if you can get to the bowling alley early. This way you can spread out a bit. If possible, get the end pair. This way, you can even get a shot down lane.

I use a tripod as well.

You can buy really cheap and small ones on Amazon.com for a good deal (use the link in the top right corner of your page to help bowlingfans out!) or you can go a little more expensive and get a really nice tripod for $60-$100.

I personally use a professional camera tripod as I have found its easier to set up, more durable (it sits in the car with four bowling bags, it takes a beating), and it has a lot more range as far as how the camera can move, pan, swivel, etc.

Hope that helps.

Maybe two people can go in on the advanced version and split the cost? With free updates, it's not as much of an issue after the original sale.

I have a Flip Video I can put on a table with tripod. So far I've only used it as a handheld.
