This year's national tournament is almost upon us, and, of course, the USBC will release the two oil patterns (team and minor events) during a kick-off show at 4 PM ET on the USBC's YouTube channel. I will link the PDFs in this thread when I see them, of course, and I'll also be looking for the live streaming schedule.

I'll be posting updates throughout the tournament, but, of course, you may also use the thread to share your own experiences at the tournament. Good luck & good bowling to all of our users who are participating in advance. smile

I'm making my debut at the Open this year and I'm pretty excited. My team is bowling March 12 and 13. I've been bowling on tough patterns as often as I can since Christmas, and really working on spares with a spare ball. Once they announce the patterns I'm going to spend several days on it preparing before leaving.

Most of the top local bowlers go there and struggle to shoot 500s. I'm hoping my preparations will have me doing better than that there.

Who else is here is making an appearance?

I meant the show will be tomorrow (today, when many of you read this).

Wifey has said that she is interested in going so that's a big plus. I don't have a team so I have to check the web site to see if i can hook up with a team looking for another bowler. I did Nationals once before. I would love to make it a regular trip.

Live stream schedule for Open and Women's Championships

Looking at the schedule, it's a given that all of the defending Regular Division champions will be on it, but we'll also be treated to Matt McNiel again. A bowler I'll try to watch is Anthony Pepe, who I've seen in person in NEBA events and will appear in his minor events on May 26. For those fans of the 11thFrame.com team, they won't appear as the full team this year, but Gail Myers Jr., who they're billing as the lifetime average leader, will appear for his minors on May 17.

I'm friends with Gail on Facebook- he has shot multiple honor scores at nationals, well over 60-70 300s, 30+ 800s, has a couple of eagles from the team event, and has a regional title or two. I actually met him (online, anyway) talking about bowling on a softball website (softballfans.com- imagine that!)

Anyway, I'll be there about the 3rd week of June. This will be my second year. We had all kinds of scoring system issues last year- a 4 hr delay for team event that put us starting our 7 pm squad at about 11, then our 10:30 pm d/s squad the next night started about an hour late, completely without scoring. We had to keep score by hand. To comp us for the problems, they gave our entire d/s squad free entries to the tournament this year.

Smooth, if you're on Facebook, there's a new group for the national tournaments where you may be able to find a team to bowl with. Just search "USBC Open/Women's Championships". smile

Fin, I know some bowlers who are also softball players as their summer sport. There's one in the other Wednesday night league at my center, but one of my older bowling friends also plays softball, and could be in the local Hall of Fame in both.

The only thing different about the lane conditions this year other than the patterns is that they're using the new Kegel Flex Walker machines, which allowed them to taper the patterns smoother.

With that, here are the patterns:

Team: 43', 24.4 ml total oil, 2.65:1 ratio

Doubles & singles: 40', 26.062 ml total oil, 2.89:1 ratio

They lengthened both of the patterns from last year, but also made them more forgiving in a different way. In team, there will be more friction to the outside, while they added more oil to the middle for the minor events for hold area. I heard one of the experts (maybe Mike Jasnau, who is the coach at Lane 81, which is new for the tournament) say you'll need a smoother ball motion for team, so something with more surface and/or a lower pin will be needed for that event.

Thoughts?

A softball team I played on is in our local hall of fame, and you pretty much have to nominate yourself and draw up a list of your accomplishments, which I don't think is the best way to decide who to induct into a hall of fame, so I have never submitted a resume. My coach from the team I played for that is in our hall is on the committee who decides who gets in, and if I gave him my resume, he'd probably make sure I got in. I have kind of a moral dilemma with that.

For those of you who watched the kickoff show, what are your thoughts on the two patterns?

The 43' medium volume team pattern reminds me of WTBA London which is pretty high scoring in my experience. I'm guessing you won't want too much surface, in order to avoid carving early hook. From the shots they showed of the bowlers in the show, it looked like there was a few board area on the outside (they even said they anticipate as much as four boards.) My guess is this will be pretty high scoring for people who don't tear up the pattern too much.

The D/S pattern is a 40' higher volume pattern. They added volume to the middle of the pattern and there's quite a bit of shape. My guess is slightly stronger covered equipment outside to build even more shape, and then ball down to stay in that zone, using a ball that won't get to be too over/under. I have a feeling the big names are going to post good singles sets.

This from a journeyman graph reader. What do you guys see?
