Hey All
Besides loving to bowl, I also like to read about, and talk (ramble incoherently) about bowling. This looks like a great place to do it.
I'm told I started bowling when I was 3, so I guess I've been at it for about 57 years, except the 80s and 90s, when I didn't throw a ball.
I bowl in two leagues a week, and, my favorite thing, a few senior scratch tournaments a month. I compete with the young guys, too...but, man, they are tough.
I'm fairly competitive with the better senior bowlers in the Detroit area (middle of the pack...), but I'm better in tournaments than I am in leagues, where I tend to fool around too much and average about 215.
I'm hoping to make some friends, and talk about bowling.
Thanks!
Mark
...yes, Richie...i've signed up for the virtual league

Welcome to the forum Big Cat. Looks like you and I have similar bowling histories with my bowling gap between 1986 to 2007. There many forums out there but the people on this one makes it my favorite.

Virtual League is great. It puts a different perspective on your league bowling.

hey do they still run that Hamtramock Tournament up there in Detroit? i bowled in that 2 years. you could throw a conventional rubber ball on those lanes and it looked like a reactive ball.

RR

they do. it's at Hazel Park Bowl, real near my house in Huntington Woods.
the scores are huge. most of the money is won by bowlers that have their 'big' day at just the right time, or by major 'baggers'...the kind that bowl in, like, one league a year on either impossible conditions, or in a mixed league with their wife, so they can book an average 30 pins under their ability for the purpose of winning money in tournaments like the Hamtramck.

http://www.hamtram.com/Hamtramck/Hamtramck_Singles_Classic.html

Hazel's owner is a stand-up guy, and they do their best to keep the baggers away, or ban them after a win...but there seems to be no shortage of baggers to take their place.

i don't usually bowl in it...i just don't have the confidence that i can walk in and average 250 any time i want, but i did bowl this year. i shot lousy, and got paid accordingly ($0)

wow. a lot different then when i bowled in it in the 80's. the lanes were super dry. we did not schedule ourselves to prevent the lanes from being 'tinkered' with but it did not matter. i shot a good game then a bad game. never did anything in that tournament. i did well in the Petersen when it ran though.

i'd like to see these guys today bowl on the lanes i bowled on back then. wink nary a 250 i bet.

yep. its a totally different 'thing' than it used to be. not sure when, or why, it changed from an 'impossible' shot to an easy house shot.

thanks for the link to the tournament. that guy Brian Lake. Have you seen him bowl? averaging 271 and 250 many times out in the event i'd like to see how he throws the ball and what kind of ball he uses in there. with that success, he can make a decent income bowling just that one event every year. i'd like to know the secret to his high carry percentage and the type of bowler he is.
seems to have it figured out.

i don't know him.
he beat a lot of great bowlers, and from what i can tell, he did it with zero handicap. i'd say the guy is just a really, really good bowler.
shocked
