The first local doubles tournament of the season had a great turnout. It filled the house and bowlers who did not pre-register were turned away. The scoring pace for the first three and last 3 games were like day and night. There were four three hundred games in the first set. My righty power player partner and I had 1400+ and were within 40 pins of the leaders after three games. Then, we hit the right end pair, had difficulty carrying the corners, and left a couple splits. After that, we moved to the other end of the house, and went cold. There was a huge difference in ball reaction, and the strikes just stopped coming, despite ball changes and other adjustments. We finished in the middle of the pack, below the cash line. Fortunately, I got back some bracket money for the first 3 games, so it was not a total bust. We hope to do better next month.

Bowled a match play tournament this weekend. First round was 3 games total pins. Did not win any high games or brackets, but advanced with a 225, 240, 257. The next round was 2 games total pins, after moving to the pair to the right. Unfortunately, one lane had a hang spot on the left side, and the best I could do was 213, 214, which was 10 pins short of advancing, and 3 pins short of cashing. Total bust! Bowled below average last night in league, too. I blame it on accidentally breaking a mirror yesterday afternoon. I need to throw some salt over my shoulder or something. Do McDonald's French fries count?

i think they are all salt so they should count. I didnt mention in my other post, but, the 15 game marathon sweeper last night i did win. I started out with my reactive ball and by the end of the 2nd game noticed i started getting erratic reaction. the lowest games were with that ball. I switch to my old Urethane stuff and never looked back. Just stuffed the pocket all night and every game after that was between 211 and 245. since there were so many games the format was whoever was on top at the end wins. I did it with my old Urethane stuff. Just kept moving back and forth 1-2 boards shoving the oil around. learned a lot about my release and game doing this.

Thanks Joe. Got a chance to try again today at my home house and did much better. Bowled 217, 181, and 223 which was good enough with the handicap to qualify 6th. However, if this had been a scratch tournament with the same players I would have made the cut anyway, so I feel good about that. A lot of people struggled today, my center tweaked the oil pattern about a month ago and I think that contributed to it. The cut was about 40 pins lower than the last tournament here in October. Fortunately even with my recent league struggles I had about a month to get used to it.

So I finished 6th out of 93 bowlers in qualifying between the 2 squads. There were 24 bowlers that advanced to match play which gave me a first round bye. I ended up bowling against another lefty in the round of 16. Was a close match until the end when I stepped up in the 10th only needing a spare and 8 pins on the fill to shut him out. I made a good shot but the ball didn't quite finish the way I was expecting and it came in light and left a 5-10 split. I made a pretty good attempt at converting it but missed the left side of the 5 pin by 1/2 an inch or so. My opponent still needed the first strike in the 10th to beat me but he went XX9 and I was out of the tournament.

Made a minor $15 profit but was nice to cash in one of these and get a little bit of validation for the work I've been putting into this game.

Saw the 2014 schedule and noticed they are making 2 trips to Westgate. I plan on at least bowling in the April tournament there. Nice to see that your house is adding $500 to the prize pool for that one. Hopefully I'll see you there.

Congrats, Svengali, on cashing. Best of luck in your next event.

There were no local tournaments for me this weekend. But, I had fun using my league scores to enter my first VirtualTournaments.com event in the 200+ division. There is not a lot of money required, only $16 to enter the tournament. But, you can add in Brackets, Eliminator, and Sidepots to make it more interesting. The payout depends on the number of entries. There were 57 entries in the main tournament this week.

I am still waiting for all the scores to be published, but it looks like my 3rd game 276 score (plus 14 pins handicap for 290) might hold up for high game. My 678 series (plus 43 pins for 721) was above my entry average of 221, but below the line to cash in the main tournament. With the current scores submitted, I would have needed to roll an 801 scratch to win or 709 scratch to cash. Unfortunately, my league bowling center also tweaked the pattern, in this case, by adding an out of bounds 5 and out...argh! But, I am still planning to give it another try next week.

If anybody else is interested, it is a fun, easy, affordable way to get into some tournament action. There is also a 199 and under division. Both use 90% of the highest entry average for handicap. If you decide to give it a try, please mention "Joe Bowler" referred you ($2.50 referral bonus). Or, if you just want to check out the action, go to http://www.virtualtournaments.com/Default.aspx. Click on the Singles and Doubles Divisions on the left for tournament results. I thought I did pretty well earning over $10,000 bowling Amateur Bowlers Tour (ABT) events years ago, but I know two guys on the Virtual Tournaments Top Bowlers list who have earned over $16,000 and $24,000. The top bowler has earned over $30,000! That's not bad for a $16 tournament entry fee (plus optionals).

hey joe,
glad you like the VT. I think it makes league more interesting. I think i ended up 6th in the singles and 4th in the doubles this time. i took a pot game as well plus a doubles bracket. if you can get out the gate well in this thing with enough brackets you could take a couple hundred dollars a week home!

good luck and maybe after the 1st of the year we can try a doubles together.

Congrats, RayRay, on the 6th place finish in the 199 & Under Division. I was surprised to see you competing in that division with a 184 average. Are you using sport shot league scores?

I was fortunate to win a bracket along with 3rd high game score in the 200+ Division for a small profit for my first Virtual Tournament. But, I have to shoot for rolling 700-800 scratch to hope to cash in the main tournament. Next week!

I bowl in one sport league and one ths league that is as tough as any sport shot. i thought i would be at a disadvantage using a sport average but surprisingly it put me in that division which makes me able to compete. where it helps me the most is in doubles when i team up with someone the handicap equalizes things. if i hit a Shark or USOpen condition that's when i have a shot at some competitive scratch scoring.

i have a Shark next week. We'll see how i do. So far i'm in singles and some side action.

I had to stay out this week because of Chameleon. Shot 590 on it. I had the 631 on Viper so i cashed. Do you know a lefty up there in your area named Dave Hart? I lost contact with him. I think he bowls in Brunswick Columbia. Oh well, that's just a longshot asking.

i've been experimenting with surface lately on my equipment and i think after all my effort I found 500/1500 seems to give me a good benchmark look on most of these sport shots. I'm getting that Hypercell when it comes out so looking forward to having that.

That's a tough situation. My PBAX league changes patterns every two weeks, so I use my fun league THS scores and average since they are more stable. Still, the house likes to change the pattern at random intervals and whenever scores go up. For example, two weeks ago there was a 300 game in the Wednesday competitive league. On Saturday, the night I bowl, the pattern was modified to include an out of bounds 5 and out. This past Wednesday, I was asked to sub and had to roll my hard rubber spare ball for strikes the 3rd game because there was no oil in the heads. Argh! I understand why the league polled its bowlers about moving to a new house. In any case, there ought to be a way to handicap houses as well as bowlers.

Sorry, the name Dave Hart does not ring any bells.
