Dennis,
Here is an animation gif of a close up of my release so you can see what it looks like. Perhaps you can see something here:

Wow, classic full roller. You can easily see the thumb exiting and the fingers causing the 90 degree rotation. This is because your fingers are facing your thumb and the ball is resting on them. With the thumb out, your fingers control the rotation direction.

To soften this release, your fingers have to relax at release and not pull the ball. Almost like the ball comes off the hand with fingers and thumb at the same time. Fingers extended, rather then bent in. This will give you a little more forward roll rather the side rotation.

The inward pull of your fingers can be managed with practice to different exits.

As I said earlier, it used to be a finger snap that created a bigger turn on the ball. You are close to that naturally, while others had to learn it.

Can you deaden the ball on a 10 pin spare? Make it roll straight? If you can do that with the same release, then you can see the difference in what I am saying.

I have never tried to deaden the release before.
But I have noticed by accident the fingers sometime relaxing and not imparting much rotation.
When this happens the ball will have less side roll and go straighter.
With my current release it is impossible to pick up a ten pin.
Even a shiny spare ball will hook away.
The only luck I have on the ten is when I use my strike ball and do a backup ball and hook it towards the pin.
But this is difficult to do consistently.

So tell me more about how to deaden the release.
Do I have to change my hand position to more straight?
Or do I just maintain the same release position but relax the fingers to minimize pull on the ball so rotation is softened?

Hi Dennis,

Here is another animation gif showing the axis rotation of my ball.
Perhaps this also will help you give me some advice.

Wow, you are extremely consistent. Every roll is over the same target.

OK, it's easy to watch your ball with the white finger holes. In this clip, you can see your ball slide between rotations. What you want to do is to release the ball so it comes off your thumb and fingers simultaneously. Watch the rotation of the finger grips so they become more forward rolling, rather than side rolling. To do this, place your hand in a hand shake position. Now rather then pulling your fingers to the palm center, raise your whole hand at release while you slightly open your grip on the ball. The ball will come off your hand straight and roll more forward.

Your ball will not slide through the center oil as much and you will gain a more arcing ball path rather then a snapping one. This is good for spares too.

Wow, that seems hard!
I will have to try that, though I am not sure I fully understand it.

It's really not. I do it for 10 pins, and it comes natural to the right side. I even roll my spare ball the same way. But, can kill a strike ball like this.

Nord, I didn't bowl for 26 years, from 1978 on. When I returned, that was the way I bowled. But, I was schooled in the new method of release to "take advantage of the new ball technology". It took some time. But, some things stayed with me. Like, not using a spare ball. Just kill the shot.

In younger years, I would easily pick out the 10 and 7 pins from a full rack, leaving 8 pins standing. And, practice it often. Back then, the pin boys would just leave the rack up and return the ball. Otherwise, they would have to empty the rack of pins and just spot the corners. Today, our system at one house allows you to set up selected pins for repeated spare practice.
