OK I am headed to the Iowa State Tournmnt on Friday (I bowl Sat and Sunday) and it appears that they are using a 40 foot USBC white pattern for the events. From the reading I have been doing it looks like playing strghtr to start is not going to be a good idea (and that is my normal shot). I looks like I need to open up the shot a little then start to go back the other way and play a strghtr line when the lanes start to break down. For those that have thrown on this pattern does that sound correct and what do I need to watch for.

You can certainly play it straighter (in fact, I assume you're speed dominant so swinging it on a 40ft heavier pattern probably wouldn't lead to great carry for you). You just need to make sure you're breakpoint is either 8-9 or 11-12, since outside is dry and flat.

The pattern shape does lend itself to play inside, but let's be honest, it's close to a house shot. In fact, many will find it easier than a house shot since the ratio is a little lower, so they won't find the huge over/under problem a lot of scratch bowlers run into on THS. So while it will help to brush up on the pattern, it will more so help to scrub up on your spare shooting, and reading up on adjustments for carry problems, since that will be the main issue on the day.

Ya carry is what I have hrd is the issue. people are not having an issue getting to the pocket but getting carry is the tricky part. I just drilled up my first plastic ball and been working with that. I am reading everything i can about the pattern so any other comments wld be great.

Don't overthink it. We use that as out house shot in my center, and its nothing to sweat. As Kitten said, for many people its dead easy because its essentially a very well blended house shot that won't give you as much over under as some super walled conditions. In our center, carry is best if you play straight rather than bellying it, and its more forgiving to miss a tad in than to miss out.

I just bowled the state tourney last week and they used the USBC White 2 pattern. It was actually easier than I thought it would be. There was definitely an OOB and if you missed your target right, it would not come back. I did fairly well and played the 14th board both days and thru out the entire set. There was enough oil that I only made a 2/1 move left during the 2nd game of the team event. I also learned in practice to slow down my ball speed just a tad.

So for me, slower ball speed and inside line worked very well.

I bought a Reign of Power couple days prior to leaving so that I could have a Heavy oil ball. I used it for singles and doubles OOB and for team I decided to use my IQ Tour solid at 500/3000

I rather bowl on defined standard patterns than some houseís trying to save money or whatever concoction. Itís gained experience that can possibly be tucked away and applied to other houses and events. I wish the Centers in my area would put down the USBC patterns.

So it sounds like i shld bring something with some surf on it. I will have my Crit Ther and modern marvel so I might take the modern down to 2000 and leave the CT at 4000 just give it a fresh surface. Other than that i will have my lucid which is at 2000 polish, IQ tour Pearl OBB, Fireroad OBB, Tropical Breeze OBB
