When shooting spares like the ten or seven or 6/10, 4/7 do you stand and walk perpendicular to the foul line or do your toes point toward the pens you are trying to hit?

I think it will vary with some people. I keep my shoulders open, so my toes point between 1 & 2 o'clock of my target.

My toes point directly at the pin(s) so my entire body is square to the pin and I walk a straight line towards it.

Your toes, hips, shoulders, awrswing, approach, slide, and follow through should be directed at the pins (or the target path to the pins) you are trying to hit.

I had always been told that you should approach the lane perfectly straight and square to the foul line. I never got past 180ish. always felt awkward trying to swing the ball out - even 5 degrees or so. . .

now I approach the line I'm going to roll the ball on. If I'm right, I go very straight. If I'm way left, I go more diagonal so I'm walking in the direction I'm going to throw the ball.

I'm MUCH more consistent now and I'm improving. It feels better.

If you are shooting spares cross-lane, you don't walk toward the middle. For example if your way of shooting the 10 is to stand as far left as you can and aim through the center arrow, you're not going to make it by walking right and sliding at the 25 board because sliding 25 and aiming 20 is going to have you shooting straight down the middle or even sending it toward the 8 pin spot! If you want to walk right then you need to aim further right than the center arrow because you wouldn't be truly shooting "cross-lane" if you're ending up near the middle.

I walk straight up and open my shoulders quite a bit to shoot the 10.

This is incorrect. You are assuming a drift to the right and shooting parallel to the gutters. This is not the same as walking towards and aiming at your target.

This is the best way to go about it, the lane doesn't matter to you, the pins do. What you need to be concerned with is rolling the ball straight through your target line.

You cannot draw a target line back to your feet if you walk straight because your line will be changing through your entire approach. By drawing a line from your breakpoint (or pin spare) through your target back to your feet, your feet should simply follow that line as you walk.
