Jared Zitek (37, Cheyenne, WY) pretended he was at his family's eight lane bowling center, and, bowling with some of that family in team, recorded the 26th perfect game of the tournament last night.

He may not be old enough to go into a casino yet, but Zeke Bayt (20, Westerville, OH) still had fun in Reno last night, putting together games of 288, 268, and 239 for a 795 set and the Regular Singles lead with three weeks to go in the tournament. He credited a ball change about midway through doubles for his success.

Lee Vanderhoef (34, Greenville, SC) joined an elite club on Sunday, as well, becoming the 28th bowler to throw multiple 300 games at the Open Championships, nearly four years to the day that he threw the first one. The game came in his team event.

Cliff Sjolander (43, Baytown, TX) pulled a leg muscle during his team event Monday night, but, thanks to borrowing a brace from a buddy, completed all nine games, including a second game of singles that was the 28th perfect game of the 2013 Open Championships.

I've mentioned previously that 28 bowlers have had multiple 300 games on the championship lanes over the years, but no one has had three of them until last night, when Craig Szplett (43, Beecher, IL) threw the third of his Open Championships career in team. His previous perfect games came in 1996 (Salt Lake City) and 2005 (Baton Rouge).

The above perfect game was the 30th of the tournament, as Ryan Fauland (32, Longview, WA) also found perfection earlier in the day in his team event. As a bit of trivia, Fauland married his wife, Crystal, in 2004 at the NBS on lanes 27-28; she was present for the 300 game.

Szplett shot his 300 2 pairs over from me in team event. He leads off on Wayne Webb's team. His other 2 games were 259 and 218 I believe. Fauland shot his on the squad right before ours. We have 5 teams here, and 4 of the teams bowled on the 3:00 team squad. Jason Sterner and Stu Williams bowled that squad. Sterner won $7520 in brackets, and Stu won $3228. My team bowled the 7:00 squad, which started at about 11, thanks to a 4 hr delay when the scoring system crashed during the first game of the 11 am singles and doubles squad. I still have my watch set on east coast time, so we started at 2 am ET, and finished at almost 5- and there was still another squad after us! They probably started at about 2:30 PT. I hope that doesn't happen again today- our singles and doubles squad is the 10:30 pm squad.
I didn't shoot too bad- they were playing really tight, and I was throwing my Sync. Shot 194-170-217-581, which was high on my pair by about 55.
On a non-bowling note, one of the guys traveling with us drew a royal flush (spades) in a 3 card poker game and turned an $11 bet into $9500.

More scoring server issues for singles and doubles- our squad was supposed to start at 10:30 pm, and about that time, with us all in the squad room, we were told it would be about 15 more minutes, because "IT was working on it." A groan went through the room at this point. I had walked through the stadium a couple of times during the day to watch some of the other squads, and there were no other delays or issues that I could see. We did get started about 30 minutes late, and the scoring system worked- for one frame. We stopped, waited for about 10-15 minutes, and the decision was made to keep score on paper, so the stadium staff had someone behind every pair keeping score with a pencil. We were fortunate enough to have someone who actually did know how to keep score, but she didn't add scores up at first, she just wrote down the results of each shot. I manually added scores between shots after doubles, but she began adding scores up for singles while we bowled.
Not too pleased with the scores, but under the circumstances, it could have been worse- 537 in doubles, 573 in singles. Should get a check in singles, as low to cash was estimated to be 560.
No travel issues, which I can't say about our entire group. I'm not sure trying to find the absolute cheapest air fare is always the best solution, as a few of us did. They spent much more time in the airports than I did. Some took over 24 hours to get from home (Virginia Beach area) to Reno or back. Not really sure if they paid less than I did, but I had zero issues, which is great.

Fin, your being an accomplished bowler, I am curious your thoughts about the shot? Was it fair? Did it play as expected? Would you bowl it again next year? If so, what would you do different?

I will bowl next year, no doubt about that. Team played very tight- tighter than I expected. I threw my Sync in OOB condition (4000), and would have better off scuffing it to 2000, or possibly even 1000. I played about 12-13 at the arrows, trying not to get it out past the tracer on the 10 board. I lowered the ball in my stance and got my hand a little further to the inside of the ball to get a backend reaction. Just coming up the back didn't give me much of a reaction. I need to work on the open-handed release for those times when a little more axis rotation is needed.
Singles and doubles hooked a ton more than team. I brought my shined Reign of Power and my Paradigm Domination in addition to my Sync, and to be honest, I didn't think I'd be using my Domination at all. I figured it was just there to fill out the other side of my bag. Well, by about the fourth game, I was using it, standing about 6-8 boards deeper than with my Sync in team, and hitting 3-4 boards deeper at the arrows. I was clean in game 5 for 217, and opened once in game 6 for 192.
The conditions were so drastically different that I don't see it as being fair to ask someone to carry enough equipment to play both without spending a ton in extra bag fees at the airport, as I could have easily brought 2-3 more balls with me than what I brought. I understand the concept- use a new oil that is supposed to hold up longer, and adjust the pattern based on the number of games in a block in hopes that the condition will still be playable at the end. The teams who finish at the top each year travel with another team, bowl with that team, and all work together to break down the pattern. I get that. I would do it, too, but being left handed, there aren't 9 other lefties that I travel with. But team, which had 30 games per block bowled on it, was on the 41' pattern. Doubles and singles, with 36 games per block, used the 39' pattern. I would have thought those might have been reversed.
On a side note, the Bowlers Journal event, which was held on the lanes adjacent to the main tournament's lanes, used the doubles and singles pattern, but played much closer to the team pattern. I used my Sync, played maybe a board or two deeper than team, but got a better backend reaction. Shot 624 in that, which will probably end up 4-8 pins out of the money. Estimated low to cash in that is 630 with a couple of weeks to go. After 3500 entries, that won't move up or down much.
I really would have liked to seen what I could have done if I had bowled at a time earlier than what felt like 2 am with functioning scoring. The tournament officials decided that they would compensate us for our troubles by refunding our entry fees. We decided to roll ours to next year, so we bowl for free next year.

Fin, Jason Sterner won't be bowling the Open next year b/c he won a PBA Tour title this year. Not sure about Stu Williams' status.

http://www.bowl.com/news/newsdetails.aspx?id=12884907908

Warren Crawford (35, McKinleyville, CA) broke through with a 300 game last night after coming close several times in his Open career. It was the 31st of the tournament, and came in team. Crawford is a two-hander.
