Need some advise on something that has come up with one of my teammates. We have an individual on our team that takes an extremely long time to execute every shot and it's becoming a huge problem. We timed him Wed night and from the time he steps on the approach, gets set, then makes his approach and finally releases the ball it takes anywhere from 50 seconds to 1 minute 20 seconds. This is on EVERY SHOT. I made the mistake of letting him fill an empty slot in a tournament where we were "flagged" by a tournament official due to our team being so slow and since the next squad was due to start we were not allowed to finish the 9th & 10th frame.
How should I handle this moving forward? Anytime we gently push him to take less time, regardless of what method we use it only slows him down more. As the captain of the team I'm contemplating replacing him if he doesn't speed things up, but he is the president of the league, so that may be a sticky situation too???

someone needs to talk to him, reality is, nobody likes a slow bowler.
He has to know this already, i would be embarrassed if i held up a team from finishing.

State the facts, if he cant help it or wont speed up, then nobody will bowl with him.
League president position does not enter into this equation.
I dont like bowling against another team or next to someone who is slow, holds up several teams.

Wont be an easy solution, but a necessary one

It could be worse. There are some excruciatingly slow bowlers that finally let the ball go only to miss their mark by 5 boards, and others with false starts that are part of their normal approach. I can't bear to watch. I have to wait until they are off the approach to even stand up when it is my turn to bowl.

One possible way to deal with the stickiness of the situation would be to pre- or post-bowl as much as possible for the rest of the season, and get a replacement next year.

I had a similar issue a year ago where our 3rd bowler would take a while to line up his shots. The president of the league approached me as captain and said others were complaining. I went up to our bowler and explained the situation and he agreed to work on speeding up a bit but told me something I always think about. He said "If I take a little longer to line up, I only have to throw one ball. Isn't that faster?" He averaged 190 or so and was very accurate. After a month or so he was able to shave about 8 seconds off, so maybe patience is all that is need. That and his willingness to try and change.

We had a guy in my one league a few years back. We called him the human rain delay. It was bad but not that bad. Instead of beating around the bush, I would be straight with him. Tell him that people are complaining and it is effecting the rest of you. There is no way that the rest of the team can get into a rhythm with him going so slow. Good luck.

I think you will have to speak to your teammate .. For the benefit of all bowlers in your league..make sure u can be as diplomatic and off hand kinda way, avoiding any unpleasantness ..

I can't bowl in 4 or 5 man teams as the waiting around for my turn just frustrates me.

Nobody needs a minute on the approach in order to make a shot. Beyond one or two inhales/exhales he's well and truly ready. Anymore time spent is hurting his game. Just use your word, tell him straight.

There is one team in my youth league that not only sandbags half the season but also takes forever as a team to bowl. we start at 915 and most teams are done by 11, if you bowl them youre not done till about 12 because theyre that slow, if i know im bowling them i make it a point to pre bowl or just not show at all

My impression was that you already talked to your teammate, and it did not help. But, perhaps he did not realize how serious an issue it is for you and your team. If you are going to try to talk to him again, I would suggest being firm, and making it clear the consequences if he does not speed up his approach.

Call a league meeting, and point out that there have been complaints about slow play without being specific as to who the offenders are. Say there are several occasions nightly of bowlers not being at their lanes when it is their turn, and of spending a lot more time on the approach than necessary. That throws other bowlers off of their normal rhythm, and is inconsiderate. If you do this without calling the offender(s) to the carpet, you will most likely get the results you're looking for without embarrassing anyone. If other teams have complained about this individual, it will be appreciated.
