I can't tell if my hand is positioned correctly throughout the swing, could someone give me a few pointers. Also, maybe on other aspects of my game? All help is appreciated smile

At the point of release, you can see the gap between your thumb and fingers and the ball. Your hand is on top of the ball in a suitcase position. That makes it difficult to impart any revolutions on the ball. Take a look at this video and notice where the fingers are relative to the equator of the ball at the point of release, and the resultant RPMs. The more you can get your hand and fingers under the ball, the greater will be your leverage, accuracy, and power.

And, some great lady bowlers demonstrating proper form and release:

What Joe said!

Here are a back view picture

and a side view picture

of Kelly Kulick.
Both men and women could do worse than try to emulate her release position.

JB and FF are right. Really good bowlers have really good form.

However, many ladies have difficulty keeping a firm wrist, and must adapt to their strengths and weaknesses.

One of your strengths is good form in the approach. So this should be giving you a nice consistent game, but you just have difficulty with certain lane conditions.

As long as you throw the ball at a speed that allows your low revs to hook into the pocket, you can build your game based on accuracy and will have a good average.

To make sure the ball hooks, just make sure the thumb comes out first (by which I mean 1/50th second before the fingers).

And remember - the arm aims, the hand hooks. You must keep those two separate, and never try to hook the ball with arm muscles, or you'll pull it into the left side.

Do wrist curls with a kettlebell if you want to improve wrist strength.

BTW - FF's pic of Kelly Kulick is classic form at the release.

The Galoot speaks wisely smile

Try this wrist test: http://www.bowl4fun.com/ron/tip20.htm
to see if you are able to keep the wrist firm.

A well fitted ball is really needed for this.
Without that you'd have to hold on to the ball instead of the other way around. And holding on to a ball is a hard thing to do over the course of serveral frames.

If you have no problem holding the ball as discribed in the link and you still top the ball a release you are probably breaking the wrist at the top of the back swing.
Try cupping it right there and it may help.

Cassie, a side video is helpful to evaluate your total game.

http://www.bowlingcommunity.com/b/ubbthreads.php/topics/136316/Help_us_help_you.html#Post136316

From the back view this is what I see. You knee a little forward lean and your footwork is too fast.

1)Standing too erect in the setup, need just a small amount of knee bend.

2)Your hand is in a good position here.Could use some forward lean.

3)Here is where you see that your timing is wrong. At the top of the back swing your right foot should be leading and your left foot is already starting to plant. Because of late timing it's difficult to stay behind the ball. You don't see in this pic but your hand is starting to turn already.Late timing will make you use muscle incorrectly (see how the ball has travel too far behind your left shoulder).

4) At the release point you can see your hand has already overturned. The ball is too high off the floor, a small amount of forward lean will help here also. And make sure your balance hand thumb stays pointed down.

Work on your forward lean.

What to work on.
1) A small amount of forward lean and knee bend at the start. Keep the forward lean throughout the approach. From the back view your 3rd step looks short. We can evaluate your timing (foot work) when you post your side video.

2)In order to release the ball correctly you must wait until the ball has reached the slide foot before making a small rotating of the hand.

Thanks! I worked on what you've guys said today at practice. I ended up bowling well, and was able to stay behind the ball much better. @Joe, that was a cool video of the RPM comparisons. It helped me see how my wrist should be positioned to get higher revs. @Fruitfly, thanks, I looked at her release, and tried to work on mine today at the lanes. It worked pretty well! @Galoot, I think I am going to start working on my wrist strength. It's hard for me to cup my 14 lb ball, so I think those exercises will help. Yeah, I don't throw the ball that fast. I've recently started getting it up to 12.5 mph, and sometimes 13 on a good day. @spr3wr Thanks that was soooo helpful! I never realized how far above the lane I was throwing the ball! Also, I thought that I turned my thumb in just by a bad habit, I never realized that it could be due to timing. I'll start focusing more on leaning too, I had been working on that before and I think I started to forget about that! I'll get a side video the next time I practice! Thanks everybody!

It's clear by her dropped shoulder that she was taught by the "New School" of bowling. Once upon of time that was considered to be bad.

Not that new school.

Coach, I thought one of the benefits of dropping the shoulder was better ball alignment with the line of vision? I don't see that happening in the older photos because their heads are tilted left. I usually see the Pro's of today like Chris Barnes with their head tilted right so the ball is under the chin.

I think one of the reasons why bowlers think it's bad to lower the shoulder is it's usually done unintentionally at the line because of some malfunction like early timing. They hear "you dropped your shoulder" and think it's not good to do under any circumstances. Also parallel shoulders were taught in the past because of the straighter lane play vs the out-and-in lines of today courtesy modern equipment/lane patterns.
