I found this link on the USBC website and I think it's an entertaining read.

Fun read, TominNJ. Brought back memories.

Friday Night, it was Rainbow Bowl. Saturday night, it was 20th Century bowl. Both long gone now. But, back then, that was where the weekend money was. And, most action started after the nightly league, sometimes, it was after the second shift league.

Handlers would not only bet on the games, but also on individual shots. Side bets were all over. $20 he gets a 9 count on his next shot. Haha.

I remember melting copper pennies and drilling my finger holes deeper. Then, fill the bottom with the liquid copper and cover with plug material. One guy drilled completely through his balls and filled the hole to various depths for different reactions. Yeah, most balls were illegal. That was the only way to get that big hook. And, everyone knew it. All you had to do was watch the ball roll and hook, cause no regular ball could do that. It was common to pick up a ball and shake it. After a lot of use, the fill material would come lose, and you could hear it rattle.

Sometimes, you'd walk away from a match, and someone would walk up to you and hand you some money. You didn't know him. But, he appreciated the fact that you won him some money and this was your tip.

And, there was another twist to this bowling. This was the day of manual scoring, pencil to score pad. And, the scorekeeper was a key figure. He had to be accurate, and write legibly and be trustworthy. He was paid a few bucks to keep score. A watcher from each side kept him honest as they looked over his shoulders.

Interesting article.

Dennis, back then was it mostly hard rubber balls on shellac finished lanes?

I knew a guy, Charlie, that made a living from action bowling (and playing cards). He was quite the character. One time, in his home house in Philly somebody bet him $100 that he could not bowl 700 in the raw. The doors were closed and he was in the 700's by the middle of the third game. The losing bettor said, next time Charlie no socks.

Bowling with just socks could get tricky on the non-slide foot.

I'm always willing to bet anybody any amount of money that my next ball will not be a strike.

Shellac was abandoned because it was too flamable, in favor of a laquer finish. Slick from foul line to pin deck. Our home house shut down twice a year to refinish the lanes in August before leagues started, and between XMas and New Years at the midway point in leagues.

Yeah rubber balls were the rage. I still remember the smell of proshops when they drilled the rubber. The balls had no internal weight. That's why some added metal to the finger holes or drilled a hole thru the ball and dripped in melted metal for added weight, generally offset.
