Well, the previous announcement that next year's Open Championships will have fresh oil for every squad set this possibility up, and the USBC formally announced it yesterday: The Open next year will be contested on two different oil patterns, one for the team event, and the other for doubles and singles. Other pace-related changes announced were the assignment of six bowlers to a pair of lanes for doubles and singles, but all six games of doubles and singles will be bowled on the same pair.

Thoughts?

As 99% of the field will be traveling to the tournament site, putting out 2 different oil patterns will mean carrying more equipment for most of us. If the length and volumes are being taken into account to allow the conditions to survive the extra 2 bowlers on the singles/doubles squads, then it shouldn't be too bad. I can't imagine they'd put down 2 patterns that play at the extreme opposite ends of the spectrum, so it should be okay. I'm looking forward to it- I'll be a 47 year old rookie, so I can't really complain.

I'm mostly surprised from a logistics standpoint. I think they're making a lot of extra work for themselves, asking for something to go wrong over the course of the tournament, and I don't see any immediate benefits to using two patterns. It just seems like an out of left field announcement to me.

Don't understand their logic. they say they sre struggling to get a fresh shot for every squad, yet they think different patterns will solve this? Doesn't it take the same effort to lay the same shot as a different one?

I think it takes more effort to lay a different shot. They have to double strip the lane's first pattern before they put down a second one to keep them from blending. They then have to do that multiple times a week for months on end. Not to mention, somewhere along the line, someone will accidentally put down the wrong shot for the wrong event, and it will somehow drastically effect the day's scoring. They talk about the integrity of the event being important, and in my opinion, all they're doing is opening the doors for the integrity to be compromised.

All the more reason to queston their logic.

What I know is that people don't shoot 800's on reverse blocks. The couple times I have been to the USBC Open, that is how the shot played, not just for me, but for every bowler on my squad. By its very nature, being a multi-day tournament, it tends not to be a fair competition. Adding another pattern just creates more opportunity for differences from squad-to-squad, day-to-day. It's too far to travel, too much of a hassle transporting bowling equipment, and too much of a longshot to be there on a day the shot is favorable. Unless they schedule the tournament to be within driving distance, for example, Atlantic City, NJ, I don't plan to bowl it ever again.

Now, the 2013 USBC Masters tournament, at Carolier Lanes, in North Brunswick, NJ, that is a whole different story...

I agree with you Joe, I didnt make it last year because it was in LA. With Reno being only 10 hour drive for me I'll be there for sure. "Apr 22-23" Nothing like bowling in the staduim.

Not sure of the squad sizes this year, but it may be possible to run singles and doubles on different lanes than team, and use 2 lane machines, making sure to run them on the designated lanes.
We're not going until later in the tournament, so we'll get some feedback on how the different patterns are playing. They do a lot of research on this kind of thing, so until I see differently, I can only assume they are trying to get the 2 patterns to play fairly similar with different amounts of traffic. This might possibly work- for right-handers. There won't be enough lefties in the field to help blend the patterns into something that plays fairly similar. As long as the length of the patterns is close, the volume and ratio shouldn't be too much of an issue.
