So I have been reading up on how to enter a PBA regional, and it's my goal to compete in one within the next 2 years. I've looked over the rules for joining the PBA itself, and I am wondering if there are any barriers of entry after becoming a member. What are the dress codes/equipment rules? Is there any sponsorship rule? And if I enter as a non member, does this make my tournament entry fee higher?

Any information would be appreciated. I have little intention of making a career out of bowling, but the experience sounds like it would be a great one.

Unless you plan on becoming a professional bowler, I would suggest thinking twice before giving up your amateur status. Many amateur organizations/tournaments disqualify PBA members. In 2008, I personally earned nearly $10,000 bowling on the Amateur Bowlers Tour. That was more than the PBA regional point leader earned the same year, and the entry fees were much smaller. Many successful pros like Chris Barnes have won their share of amateur tournament dollars before turning pro.

I don't have any intentions on becoming a professional, so should I just enter a regional tournament as a non member then?

The PBA has a lot of rules to follow if you enter their events. It may be helpful to scan the rule book before considering entering. (Dress code rules start on page 65)

Entering as a non member is an option, but the entry fee is higher. Checking the rules is a good idea. For example, all of your equipment, including balls, shoes, wrist support (if you use one), etc. need to be PBA-approved.

Non-Members pay $280, members pay $220 so its $60 more for a non-member. In order for a non-member to enter you have to pay by money order or cashiers check and speak directly with the Regional Director.

Dress code is collared shirt and slacks, shirt must be tucked in. Belt must be worn. Name must be permanently affixed to the back of the shirt and must be worn during all practice sessions, pro ams and the event.

There is no sponsorship rule via the PBA other than where logos can be placed. If you have a sponsor they must be product registered through the PBA, which the majority are with exception of the smaller companies (Morich, Elite, etc).
