Has anyone else bowled at a night-club style bowling alley, where the martinis take precedence over the bowling? I guess it's similar to rock-n-bowl, but very shi-shi. I went to one tonight, and I must say it was the spottiest conditions, I've ever come across. I tried every trick in the book, and I couldn't replicate a single shot, even when I tried to throw it straight. I actually halved my average. I'm bowling in a tournament tomorrow, and I'm thinking this was a baaaaaaaaad mistake. Anyone else agree?

Cheetah,
For me - every bowling session should have a purpose. There's a time for practice, there's a time for competition, and a time for socializing.
For me, a situation like you faced last evening should be looked at as a social gathering; nothing more - nothing less.
Now was it a mistake? Only if you believe it was a mistake. Did you over-consume alcohol? If so, this was a mistake (but hey - you're young and you might bounce back pretty well if you did over-indulge because you're not an old man - like me!).
I never let social gatherings either boost or ruin my confidence. Normally situations like this have very spotty conditions (like you mentioned), and the main reason that people are there is to socialize.
So I would say "don't sweat it". You went out, you had fun, and tomorrow is another day.
Good luck in your tourney!
Marty

The beers might have had something to do with it, but I'd rather blame the conditions . I did forget about it in time for the no-tap tournament and shot an 890. Thanks for the pep talk, getting out of my head is my biggest enemy.

Hello Bowling Fans. Recently I when to a Bowl where I bowled when I was a kid. It is one of the oldest Bowls in the USA, The Garden Bowl(It should be called dust bowl) and it still featured rubber bowling balls in the racks. They did some modernizing they had synthetic vaneer installed over the old wood lanes. They removed nearly all of the poles that were standing down the lanes. I still had to walk across the ajacent lane to retrieve my bowling ball. The approaches should have had pothole signs. The music was loud, the beer, wine, and shot were flying. There were strobe lights, fog and it was dark. The sixteen lane house was on jam and customers were waiting by the dozen. I looked over lanes 1 & 2 and saw that someone from my current league hand bowled a 300 game there. I bowled horribly. But I need to work on focus and concentration, so I have cleaned up my "Pink Hammer" And planned to go bank again.

LOL, I'm right there with you Darrell.
Since I have the problem of getting too serious sometimes, I'll go out and bowl in an environment such as you described.
When I see someone shooting the lights out (wait - weren't they already out?? LOL), that really puts things into perspective for me.
I suppose the lesson I continuously try to re-learn is to have fun. It sounds SO simple, but I get so competitive sometimes, I lose sight of the fact that I bowl for enjoyment - not just for the competition.
Bowling in a "night-club" environment helps keep me grounded when I need it (which is probably more often than I care to admit!).

Pink Hammer...still a viable weapon in my arsenal. Doesn't come out much, but still getting me award scores at these dry Ohio lanes.
