I am trying to find a coach so I can actually learn how to release the ball correctly. However, in my area the only thing I have found is a bowling clinic every Sunday. I'm not sure if this will be beneficial or if I should try and find a coach in my area. The whole group setting is keeping me from doing the clinic because I'm not sure I'll get the one on one attention I'm sure I need. Thoughts?

By going to the clinic you may find the person who can direct you to a coach. The clinic can't hurt, it can only help you. I'D CHECK IT OUT...

I figured it would help. I'm just getting frustrated with my release. I can release it straight without a real issue it's when I actually try to use the ball the way it's meant to be used I get a really problem. However, it could be the way it is drilled because it is a beginner ball to learn to hook.

Where in VA do you live? I assume that's for Virginia, not Vancouver?

If so, Coach Jim lives in Northern VA he can probably suggest some coaches in the state.

He is very good with videos that people post here, too.

I live in the Hampton Roads region. I've seen Coach Jim's responses and he is very knowledgeable. I have a Ebonite Cyclone 12lbs. I didn't know what size to get and I was able to throw a 12lb house ball easily. The Pro Shop guy said most people start low and move up to a heavier weight. I'm considering going to 14 or 15lbs.

I've seen videos on youtube of the ball hooking with a lot of revs so I know it can be done. I'm just not releasing it right.

You can hook the ball. If you can shake somebody's hand, then you can hook. Next time you go to the lane, release the ball with your hand coming up the side of the ball as you would be reaching out to shake somebody's hand.

This would probably be hard to accomplish with your regular approach routine, so just to get a feel for the ball being released, do a half-speed routine. The ball should go slower, and if you release it right, you will see it hit the dry and hook across.

Do that a few times, to see and feel what it is like.

I am able to hook the ball and it is slow but I'm just not consistent with it. That's my main problem. I did this drill and was able to feel the release but I just get in my head and tense up when I'm doing the whole routine. And it is very possible I am muscling the shot and don't have a free arm swing. When I concentrate on a free arm swing I can definitely feel a difference in the way my shoulder, arm, and hand feel but then I get in my head again lol.

Go to the clinic. I've seen those sort of weekly things, and a lot of times they turn out being a one one one session. If it doesn't turn out that way, you will learn a thing or two, and you will be able to find a coach. Good coaches are worth seeking out. You'll find that everyone who bowls has their own opinions, and their own advice, and often it is garbage and will send you down the wrong path. Good luck on your journey. You will find it rewarding, and once a few things click (which can take time) it wont be that difficult anymore.
