USBC Hall of Famer Jeff Richgels, whose Turbo 2-N-1 Grips team will take to the championship lanes in a couple of months in defense of their team title, has always said it actually takes 10 bowlers to win a team title, not just 5. While there's still a lot of bowling left, a pair of teams sponsored by Nicholas J's Pro Shop of La Crosse, WI, made a case for his point, as the Nicholas J's Pro Shop 2 team surged into the Regular Team lead with games of 1,115, 1,165, and 1,121 for a 3,401 series, followed in 2nd place by their companion team, which shot 953, 1,098, and 1,153 for a 3,204 total. They're a young group, as Nick Heilman is the veteran of the group at age 29 with 9 championship appearances, but have bowled together in college and leagues; the companion team was composed entirely of first-timers to the Open Championships.

On the other side of the River Center, K Lines 2 of Gildford, MT shot games of 875, 912, and 871 for a total of 2,658 and are the new Classified Team leaders.

Al Pilon (56, East Grand Forks, MN), a self-described early-riser who initially wasn't thrilled about bowling doubles & singles in the first squad of the day, started the day this morning with the second 300 game of the tournament.

Matthew Tuckfield (23, Miami, FL) started doubles on Sunday with a disappointing 169 game, but turned that disappointment into history with the third 300 game of the tournament the next game.

Andrew Kleutgen (22, Wild Rose, WI) has typically been a good team bowler, averaging more than 17 pins higher in team than doubles & singles, but didn't get off to the best start with a 541 in team, and his struggles continued in doubles, fouling twice and falling on the lane on the way to a 485 in that event, his worst set in four championship appearances.

After a new heel and a pep talk from his doubles partner, however, Kleutgen threw games of 219, 276, and 290 in singles to take the Regular Singles lead with a 785 series.

While I'm not going to nationals I practiced on the shot today and the line to play is definitely, you have the most room out there. I was able to average 180 for 9 games while missing a ton of spares, for me the key was pin down equipment is going to give the smoothest look out there because my pin up breeze went Brooklyn every time I threw it outside, this is 2 handed of course

Adam Barta (32, Girard, OH) threw three clutch strikes at the end of doubles to finish with a 279 game and a 718 series (other games were 235 and 204), and his partner Hugh Miller (55, Mercer Island, WA) added a 269-209-233=711 to enable to pair to grab the Regular Doubles lead yesterday with a score of 1,429. Miller is a seven-time titlist on the PBA Tour.
