The driller will help you pick an entry level ball. Tell him you want to hook the ball so he doesn't pick a plastic ball. He'll measure your hand and drill it for you. He should b interested in having you roll the ball to mae sure it comes off your hand properly, and may give you ome pointers.

The driller will probably pick a "generic" layout that will give you some length, some mid-lane, some back end. Until your game developes abit, the driller wont be able to "custom fit" a layout for your game. Once you develop a consistent release, determine what your style is, and get a feel and understanding for lane conditions, you'll really be able to pick layouts.

That sounds good..

two questions though

what is midlane exactly.. what does it mean to read the midlane etc?

will the ball still snap at the end... get good hook etc?

A reactive ball goes through a few phases when it does its job correctly. From the time it hits the lane, it should be skidding through the oil, creating no friction. The longer the ball skids, the more man-made energy will remain in the ball when it contacts the pins.

Eventually, the ball will start to "read" the lane, or stop skidding. Its at that point that the ball starts to hook. A bowling ball only hooks once, so if it stops skidding, and starts hooking too soon, it will "roll out" or lose that man made energy before hitting the pins...a bad thing.

A good geneic layout will be one that will allow your ball to skid, read, hook, and roll at good places and times on most conditions you will face in your early bowling experience.

With your first ball the most important thing is the fit. On my first ball the thumb was redone four times over a year until I felt I could swing the ball without gripping it.

Don't worry about the layout until you have consistency in your game, your tilt, rotation, revs, and speed will all change making a layout an imperfect match.

Is it natural to put a little thumb grip during the downswing? that's how I feel as it is now.. start loose, pushout... drop and then my thumb grips a little bit..

It is natural to want to grip it, fight the urge. If necessary add bowlers tape to the back of the hole (top of the thumb) to snug it up. Ball should grab you.
