This summer I am bowling in a doubles league. I'm not positive, but I think you bowl two games on one pair, and then two games on the next pair. However the format works, there are four games a night. I am also joining a scratch trios league in the fall, and it is also a four game league. Both of the leagues are sanctioned. I am just curious how the USBC handles the sanctioning of series for these leagues. People have gotten credit for 800s in both of these leagues, but how? Do they count only the first three games? Could games 2, 3, 4 count as a series? Just curious...

In a 4 or 5 game format, awards are usually based on just the first 3 games. I believe in formats that involve 6 or more games like some tournaments, each set of 3 games is considered a series, for example games 1-3, 5-6 and 7-9.

The first ever 900 series shot by Jeremy Sonnenfeld was in a 4 game tournament over 4 different sets of lanes. His 900 was his first 3 games of the block.

Wow, I never knew that. Makes it all the more impressive. Another reason I was curious about this was an article I just read about Tommy Gollick who recently rolled games of 279, 300, 300, 300 and set a USBC record of 47 consecutive strikes in a four game scratch league. While he gets a nice record, he won't get credit for a 900 series.

I should say the first ever sanctioned 900 series. There were others that weren't sanctioned. The ABC (now USBC) pretty much had to sanction his because of the fact that it was a tourney and he did it over multiple lanes. If they didn't, then they couldn't sanction any part of the tourney.
