I haven't seen any reports on what balls are being used, but I know people who have bowled already, so I guess I can ask them, Dennis.

I'm in the same position as you. But, I was interested to know what balls were being used by the leaders.

A three-way shootout on Saturday night saw the Regular Team lead change hands once again, this time by Brian Brazeau Pro Shop out of Ocala, FL, who shot games of 1,149, 1,150, and 1,140 for 3,439, the highest team score in the 16 year history of the National Bowling Stadium. Jace Peterson paced the team with a 747 series.

Closely on their heels was Cambridge 1 of Feeding Hills, MA, featuring Team USA member Shannon O'Keefe, who shot 3,410 to take second place. Pam's Boys 1 of Salem, OR settled into fourth place with 3,371.

After coming up just short of the team lead, the members of Cambridge 1 (mentioned in the previous post) buckled down in doubles and singles to post a leading Team All-Events score of 10,023. Bill Webb led the way with a 2,097 all-events total.

Singles: 570
All-Events: 1,767

Classified Division

Team: 2,364
Doubles: 971

Ray Edwards (46, Middle Island, NY) felt something pull in his back last weekend in a PBA regional tournament, but the injury actually worked to his advantage, as it made him take it easy enough to post 768 in team, 774 in doubles, and 716 in singles to move into the Regular All-Events lead yesterday with 2,258.

Chad Nelson (38, Owatonna, MN) had a stubborn 5 pin cost him a perfect game in the 2006 Open Championships, but, 5 years later, he got redemption yesterday in his singles event, sandwiching a 300 between games of 219 and 237. It was the ninth 300 game of the tournament.

Updated low-to-cash:

Regular Division

Team: 2,723
Doubles: 1,114
Singles: 570
All-Events: 1,770

Classified Division

Team: 2,366
Doubles: 967
Singles: 486
All-Events: 1,526

T.J. Schmidt (22, Osceola, IN), bowling with his father Mike in doubles, started the event with 8 consecutive strikes for a 268 game, then rattled off the next 22 in a row to finish with 300 and 287 for an 855 series yesterday. A 3-10 split cost him the Open Championships series record (862 by Bo Goergen in 2009). Schmidt then bowled 720 in singles to go along with 657 in team to move into second place in Regular All-Events. The 300 game was the 10th of the tournament.

http://www.bowl.com/news/xmlburner.jsp?xa=./webapps/ROOT/news/main/data/041711BobPetersen.xml

On Saturday, Bob Petersen (62, Crystal Lake, IL) had games of 268, 216, and 196 to move into a tie for the Classified Singles lead with 680.

With a national (perhaps worldwide) audience looking on via the USBC's UStream.TV feed last night, defending Regular All-Events champion Matt McNiel (25, Chanhassen, MN) put on a show in his doubles event, throwing the 11th 300 game of the tournament in his second game en route to an 822 series, becoming only the second bowler (after John Socha of Oak Creek, WI) with 2 800 series on the championship lanes, and the 28th with a 300 game and an 800 series in the Open. Indeed, after posting a 745 team series on Sunday night, McNiel had a chance to get in position to successfully defend on his last ball, but a split left him with a 674 singles set and a 2,241 all-events total, good for second in Regular All-Events. The performance also helped his team, Linds Cedarvale 2 of Eagan, MN, claim the Team All-Events lead with a 10,027 total.

Matt Weggen (31, Muscatine, IA) did something yesterday that no bowler in the history of the Open Championships has ever done: with games of 269-258-279 in doubles and 279-290-257 in singles, he became the first bowler to throw consecutive 800 series on the championship lanes (806 in doubles and 826 in singles). With a 636 in team, he now leads Regular All-Events (2,268) as well as Regular Singles. A Big Four (presumably in his team event) was the only thing that prevented Weggen from matching another record...90 clean frames, accomplished by Jeff Richgels in 1997.
