Wasnt sure what to call this, with Jordan's new ball his coach and Pro Shop guy took his grip size down and did the same with his other equipment. Now after a game and a half he gets like rug burns I guess you would call it on his finger tips and today he said they were stinging.

According to his coach, pro and others it is a sign he is getting out of the ball right and several of them showed us their finger tips and they look the same. His new ball does it the worst grips are a bit tackier, is there something he can put on his fingers to help alleviate it? Lick his fingers maybe? Or are they crazy and this shouldn't happen. Had his equipment checked by the Pro Shop where we was at today and he said all four balls were spot on as far as span goes.

Here is a pic of what they look like.

Man! I would get larger inserts and start taping my fingers!

I get this too. I haven't found a way to stop it, but I'm mostly used to it now since, even when I get larger insert, it has been doing it to my fingers for about 1.5 years.

I actually brought my grips up in size since mine were getting too tight if my fingers swelled. This does not look right at all. I know that general wear and tear on the fingers is normal, but not this severe.

Could the pitch of the finger holes cause this trouble? Is he using those clear inserts which as tackier than usual?

It's also an option to not use inserts. If my wife and I didn't share, I'd consider going insertless again. You could always add grip tape if you wish.

I have the same burn on my fingers. I had it when I used finger grips, without grips, changing pitches, changing finger sizes. If I don't bowl for the summer, it goes away. Within 3 games of starting in the fall, it's back. Truthfully, it doesn't hurt so I don't worry about it anymore.

Ok Thanks for the input, I do not get them but I do not lift my ball much at all and my grips are a bit loose, I shim them to get the right feel for me.

I feel more comfortable seeing others do the same thing, most of the people where he bowls that had the same issue of course got their equipment from the same Pro Shop as him so thought maybe it wasn't normal it was just that the Pro Shop believed the tighter the grip the better.

His coach says the more he bowls the tougher that skin will get and he will not notice it anymore.

I had that. I switched from the pro grips with the nubs in them , to the oval grips, and they went away.

Does the kid /want/ burns now and tough skin later? Why not experiment with a secondary ball and some tape on the fingers during practice? Also, if you try the vacu-grip method using the old inserts, the inserts should expand to accommodate the taped fingers. For me, that turns a problem into fun experiments. heh

they're calluses - I always get them. No big deal, in fact I kinda use them - if I get a bit of a "burn" from them, it means I'm getting good lift with my fingers. . . if I don't, then I'm killing my release. . .
