Curious as to what the rule of thumb is for when you want a ball pin under fingers, to begin its "bananna shape" hook/read early vs when you want a long angular hook (hockey stick). I know people have their preferences but for those that use both types of equipment when do you use one primarily over the other. It seems to me they can be a bit interchangeable.

The amount of dry you have to work with will dictate which will work better. Pin over finger balls turn and burn in a shorter distance, so longer oil patterns with shorter distances of dry from the end of the pattern to the pins. When you have shorter oil patterns and longer distances from the end of the pattern to the pins you will need pin under fingers balls to help preserve the ball's hitting power until it gets to the pins.

Sometimes they can be interchangeable where when one is not carrying the other might, you get a feel for when it will and will not work after a few years of experience. Don't be afraid to try one or the other, this is how you learn what will and will not work. Remember if it doesn't work you were probably going to be shooting a spare anyways, so what do you have to lose, and if a ball change works then you can finish the game/match strong, instead of grinding it out.

Thanks coach. I think you hit it on the head for me. I was taught this as well. Shorter pattern get the pin under ball. Pin over for longer. Then reality set in and I found pin over carrying more at times on the THS or 38ft house shot. so I started wondering what signs to look for in a pattern to determine this. Also because you see so many variations in drillings being thrown and some are working quite well. But what you said is what i was always thinking. I guess i just wondered how relevant it was anymore with the balls we have now.
