They resurfaced our lanes about 4 weeks ago and, although they look beautiful, we are really having issues with carrydown and slick heads. When they prep the lanes for league (THS) they behave pretty well through the first half of the game, but then the carrydown takes over the lane and makes it slick as snot, even trying to work outside the 5th board.

My go-to ball is a 2Furious I keep at 2000Ab, it works well through the first game or so, but even it starts to go away by game #3. The Noize... forget it; that's why I made it my spare ball... and I just had it refinished back to 2000Ab with no noticeable improvement.

So, by the 3rd game I'm down to urethane which can be hit or miss.

My question is, what would be a better way (ball surface, etc) to address the awful carrydown? Right now I handle it by slowing down the 2Furious and moving right (from center to 2nd dot)and playing down and in, more or less. That tactic is not carrying the pins and I'm getting frustrated with it. I don't want to go butcher up my ball with a different finish because that could become a tail-chase in and of itself.

I'm a Tweener... middle of the road on everything. 15-16MPH (at the pins) medium revs. What do you guys think?

I combat carry down every week. Typically moving right after the first game and then moving back to where I started for the 3rd game. I usually use a earlier rolling ball. Pin down short pin type of ball so it gets into a roll a little bit sooner. I tend to leave more corner pins this way but it gets me by. I'd say move right and slow your ball speed down. If you aren't carrying try moving forward and backwards on the approach a couple inches. If you're interested in getting a new ball I'd suggest something stronger. Maybe a Roto Grip Mutant Cell or a Storm Prodigy. Something along the lines of a Medium Heavy oil ball. All companies have their own versions out.

Good luck!

I would go with a high RG early rolling ball, if there is such a thing...

A Global Bank or other "self-righting" asymmetrical core would work.

If you have carrydown, then the heads should not be dry. You should have one or the other, I would think.

Cells generally don't like carrydown....

Bottom line, less skid-flip and more mid-lane read for carry-down conditions.....

I'm just repeating what I've heard. Anyone else feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

This is counter-intuitive, but try a release with more tilt. The ball might not hook, but it will get plenty of pin action.

Hey Charlie98, please consider reading the article above. It helped me better understand Carry-down and how lanes really transition. Hope this helps.

Having a C-System 3.5 is good for carry down. I've shot my best games in a league night with carry down during the 2nd game.

That's exactly what I have been doing. By the 2nd game I'm right 3 boards of center, by the end of the 2nd I'm on the 2nd dot... and then by the end of the third game (if I'm still using the 2Furious) I'm back over at center dot.

Thats what I have been doing start with the Prodigy or Hyroad moving right on the second game, then move left for the third and throw the Fast.

WOW! What an article! It does explain much of what I'm seeing... reduced carry through the pins and a gassed-out ball by the time it hits. But my ball isn't hooking more, it's hooking less. But that would be explained by oil absorbtion in my coverstock.

I do need to train myself to stay and watch where the ball goes once it has hit the pins, something I don't normally do.

The article is deep and I will definitely be looking @ the pins tomorrow night @ league. Here's another quick suggestion before your next time on the lanes, Give Your Bowling Balls A Nice Warm Bath With a Degreaser (25 minutes 2X Palmolive or Dawn). If you own a ball Spinner, use an Abralon Pad to sand down your balls before washing (360 Grit). Return your Balls to the original factory finish upon completion (using appropriate abralon pads and polishes). Hope that helps too.
