Well for the last 6 weeks (take away 2 weeks for vacation & day shift at work)I have bowled my first 3 practice games at the same time doing the back-up ball drill. Interested to hear if it has helped me.
I still see me pushing on the down swing & wrapping my swing behind my back some. Balance arm still pulling back too soon. Still throwing and not rolling. My ball revolutions are now 200 instead of 180. Some of the time the ball revolutions are 225. Better but still lacking.
Always having fun. ~ John

You aren't waiting for the ball see how you keep your hand in position all the way through the release in the back up ball drill, that is because you are trying to throw a back up ball. You need to try to throw a back up ball, then wrap your hand around the ball instead of letting it come to the inside at the release, let your hand unwrap and extend your fingers through the middle of the ball to your break point, this will snap your wrist through the ball causing it to rotate and hopefully hook.

Coach Jim,
I don't know if this will help John or not? I have found that setting my ring finger at 7:00 in my stance, then at release next to my ankle, after thumb has dropped out feel like I lead with my thumb out to 1:00. This seems to keep my wrist firm and fingers rotate. Is this the same or similar to the unwrap and extend you describe in your post?

I'm not having an easy time envisioning what you are saying, but this goes back to what I was saying in another thread about swing thoughts. When I say to myself wrap/unwrap or extend through the bottom of the ball it may be the same as you saying "set my ring finger at 7:00 in my stance, then at release next to my ankle, after thumb has dropped out feel like I lead with my thumb out to 1:00." It's all good as long as you get the results you are looking for. This is why it's good to video tape your practice to know if you are doing what it feels like you are doing.

you have a nice throw John. your back up ball throws had a nice flow, good cadence on your approach, and a free armswing which you don't see very often.
I do noticed that your timing is just a little early. fine if you like to throw straight but since it sounds like your looking to get a few more revs, you really need to delay your hinge about a 1/2 a step. Since your a 5 step approach think first step, 2nd step... then let the ball hinge. Your hinge is starting before your second step is getting to floor.
As for your balance arm, your really not using it to its full potential. the Idea with pointing it forward is to get your shoulders open. But your video barely has the shoulders opening at all. Try actually pointing your balance arm at your target (even point with your finger at the mark) and stretching it forward, this will open the shoulders more. The time you move your arm to the side is still a preference thing so don't worry too much about it, rather get the shoulders open first.
For the wrap around armswing (one of my personal demons) focus on where the hinge swings at the start. you want the sensation that it is going to hit your right leg. as long as your stepping over on the second step (you could do better) you shouldn't hit it. watch jason couch vids. he actually brushes his hand on his leg alot of times. thats how close you need your hand to your leg to prevent the ball natrually swinging around at the top of your swing.
