The local center's laying down PBA shots for open bowling on Thursday nights. First up tonight is the Cheetah (AMF HPL synthetic surface). Basically, I know to throw fast and down the outside. Anything I should watch for? The Fury Pearl's dulled down to 800-grit, so I hope to get a decent reaction that's not too snappy out of it (it's not very snappy in the first place).

I would watch out for your ball using too much energy before hitting the pocket.

You get enough friction on Cheetah so there really isn't a need to use a ball with that much surface. It's going to turn early and burn out, even being a pearl. If you do use it expect a lot of single pin leaves if you can keep it in the pocket.

Got it. Maybe I should use the weaker, but more polished, Spit Fire. I'll see how it goes. Can't wait.

Pros sometimes use weak, dull balls along with a weak release on cheetah. Balls that are too shiny or polished, or lots of axis rotation, can make it difficult to control the breakpoint and create an over-under reaction on Cheetah. Sometimes, a controlled burn out can be a good thing.

Dull and controlled is the way to go, for me. I use the oil in the middle more to eliminate the back end as much as possible. So, a 15 out to 10 line works best... for me anyhow.

On a "real" Cheetah pattern you need to get the ball outside of 5 for the best results. Just saying that because I've not seen a Cheetah shot where you can go 15 out to 10 as Dennis said. The only one I've bowled on is at Earl Anthony's Dublin Bowl, where Bill Cooley does the lanes and he does a lot of regionals so it's pretty close to the "real" PBA Cheetah pattern. The guys who were really scoring were going straight up the boards, you couldn't really swing it out there or it was too over/under.
