Why do people in New England fear ten pin bowling? Most people outside this region bowl the ten pins. Including little kids. Is it "different strokes?"

They have plenty of ten-pin in New England, don't they? Why do you think people fear it?

I didn't fear it -- sometimes when visiting family out of state we'd bowl tenpin, and I did it back home once in a great while, too. It was just that when I was growing up, there were 3 candlepin centers closer to me than the nearest tenpin center. Same thing when I went off to college -- there was a candlepin center in the basement of Fenway Park a mile away, whereas I would have had to drive at least half an hour to get to a tenpin center. I wasn't willing to do that. Just a matter of what was closest at hand.

New Englanders do not fear 10 pin bowling, where did you get that idea? Its just that candle pin and duck pin were kind of localized games in that part of the country. We had both within easy driving range when I was a kid. Its like Curling. Unless you are in Canada or close to Canada you don't really hear much about it.

I've been hearing from some people that I know here in Massachusetts that bowls candlepins, claiming that the ten pin balls are too heavy for them. And they prefer the small ball bowling. Because the balls are much smaller and lighter. A woman from New Hampshire that I've just met last weekend says that she only bowls candlepins. And I was trying to share the ten pins with her. But in most places in the United States, and around the world, only has ten pins. And most people that grew up in that society with it loves to bowl them. Even little kids. I've even seen little kids bowling the ten pins over at Town Line Ten Pin. But they're maybe some people in New England that are prejudice against Ten Pins. I grew up with candlepins, and I started bowling the ten pins when I was 22. And I never complained, or had a problem with it.
