Welcome to the site! I'm new here as well. The guys and gals on here know their stuff and won't steer you wrong.

I began bowling as a scrawny 13 year old back in 1988. Prior to getting serious I used a 12 lb. house ball. Then, when I began league bowling, my friend gave me my first ball, an old 14 lb. AMF. Like you, I remember wondering when I had it drilled if I'd even be able to control a heavier ball. I did just fine. I think you'll be surprised how much more weight you'll be able to handle when the ball is custom fitted to your hand.

Also, like Beefers1 said, get a lane and let the driller watch you toss a few balls. It may not seem like much, but itíll be well worth it. The proper drilling layout just as important as a good fit.

Good Luck!

Thanks again guys, super stoked on all the helpful information. Can't wait ti make up my mind and get my stuff ordered.

I asked earlier, but now I can be more specific. Is there such thing as too much ball when starting out?

I'm really interested in the Roto-Grip Mutant Cell, but I think it might be too advanced for me. Is that a safe or true assumption? Or can I basically learn to throw anything?

If the driller can't watch you throw a few balls, make sure you take good, clear videos from the back and side and maybe the front, as well as a closeup of how you release your ball. The video may even be more helpful.

I plan on doing both in the next few days.

Mutant Cell is out of the question, after searching the forum and doing research I know that's out of the question for me (for now).

Going to go with something more on the tame side, probably the roto-Grip Riot, and Crown Clear then go from there. Have a Pro Shop owner watch me, and a family friend who is probably one of the best locally figure out how they need to be drilled.

Don't be afraid to looked at used balls. Single drilled balls would be preferred. You may get a good deal to have it plugged and drilled.

You can throw a 14lb ball. Once you get it drilled to your grip, and personally fit you'll find you can. My wife is very thin, and throws 14 no problem. I would start with 14lbs. Get a good fit. I would try and make sure your thumb hole was snug(it'll be weird at first) but this will prevent you grabbing on the ball. You develop more of a free swing(little muscle at all) and the ball weight doesnt matter as much. Missy Bellinder who is a very petite person, bows with a 16lb ball. Free swing. I would definitely start there at 14lbs. I think anything less and you not only will be changing equipment again soon, but will have to sort of re-learn your technique again with a heavier ball.

When I started bowling 4 years ago I threw a 12lb house ball straight. I thought 14lbs was way heavy. Now a days if I go pick up a 12lb house ball it feels as light as feathers. I'm 6 foot tall 156 and I throw 15 with ease. I bowl thumbless which means I cup the snot out of the ball. All you have to do is build up wrist strength and you'll be fine.

I just bowled my first high game (broke 200) and 600 series WITH a house ball. I've never been so stoked or excited. It was unreal. My friends fiance took some videos with her camera for critique and of my scores, so I should have them today or tomorrow.

So my new high game is 230. I had 6 strikes in a row, another high.
I also spared an entire game, so my accuracy is getting better.

I'm so addicted, haha.

I'm also going to join a beginners league that will give me 3 free games every single day from May 2nd, until September 1st. An hour of league practice, and 3 league games a week. All for only $11 a week. So that's like 24 games a week for $11, it's worth it for that alone!

I'm really looking forward to it.
