Guys, just want to ask if there are rules of thumb regarding whether to use your spare ball or your strike ball for different spares? I read some time ago that there are times you should use your strike ball for spare.

i like to use my strike ball when i leave multi pin spares that are clumped together.

plastic for Single pins or two pin spares.

that may be just me or everyone.

Generally speaking, the only time you should use your strike ball for spares (assuming you throw your strike release) is with double-wood spares, where there's a pin directly behind another. You need to hook at those spares to drive out the back pin, though it's possible to also throw straight down the boards at them if you're extremely accurate. You might also get away with hooking at the spares near the middle, such as the 2, 3, 5, and 8, and its combinations. As for washouts, you can throw a brooklyn hook shot but I would rather just throw straight. Side-by-side splits you can make either way; hooking might give you a bit of room for error. I would generally avoid hooking at multi-pin spares for fear of chopping.

It really boils down to preference but when using your strike ball the ball might not hook or enough or too much. That's why some advocate plastic for everything. Other than large splits I have picked up the majority of conventional leaves using my plastic ball including a full rack.

I'm terrible at converting buckets. Throwing straight at it usually results in leaving the back pin, and hooking at it usually ends up chopping the 5 pin or also missing the back pin. Once I left 4 consecutive buckets (how's that for consistency? LOL) and opened all 4 frames.

Spares are a very personal thing. Ask 10 bowlers and you'll get 10 sets of advice.

I pick up the bucket by moving right 7 boards and throwing the exact same shot at the exact same arrow target that left it in the first place.

For the 1-2-4/10 I move right 10 boards and do likewise.

Of course, I only ever bowl on THS, and don't know if this will also work on sport patterns.

For double wood (2-8 or 3-9) I throw a hook. Actually, 2-8 is half a bucket, so very similar technique. For 3-9 I just throw a gentle hook, not a massive one.

For other spares I throw straight with a plastic ball.

For splits like 5-7 and 4-9 I just aim straight at the side of the lower-numbered pin. I can throw straight down any board I want to.

How does shooting at 7-pins with a strike ball work? Seems to me that if you miss just a bit right then the ball will hit oil and won't hook enough, and get just a tiny bit and the ball will hit the dry boards early and hook into the gutter.

As for buckets, I have success converting the 3-5-6 throwing hard (yes, hard; about 20-22mph vs 15mph strike ball; but that just works for me) and straight over the middle arrow. Less angle means less room to chop. If only I can apply the same mentality when there's a 9 pin back there.

Beefers, I know your comment is not aimed at me, however, I must admit:

Not that I'm advising anybody do this, but just for grins I like to get over at the first arrow and throw straight down the 5 board and let my reactive hook over to the 7 pin. I don't know, it's just fun, you know? I don't bowl in leagues or tourneys, and it's just a kick. 9 times out of 10, though, I'll throw straight at the 7, using my spare ball.
