You reminded me that I have a Pro-Pin HyRoad still sitting in it's box. I just opened the box and found the Layout Pamphlet which states:

"Since the breakthrough of fine tuning reaction characteristics by the use of mass bias placements in the 1990's, large pin out balls have been a staple for many STORM pro staffers on the professional tours. Big pin outs occur when the weight block tips to one side of the ball. The further the weight block is tipped, the more the mass is biased to that side of the ball pulling the CG away from the pin. Advantages of these balls are as follows:

-Enhanced dynamics
-Stronger preferred spin axis
-More drilling versatility
-Superior reaction characteristics
-Enables drillers to use larger extra holes increasing flare potential and ball reaction"

On the Back:

Pro-Pin Technology
-Enhanced Dynamics
-Increased Versatility
-Used almost EXCLUSIVELY on the PBA Tour

Really long pins, I think more than 5-5.5". And CGs that are out of line more than 2.5-3" I think.

They are factory seconds. They are called Pro-CG/Pin by Storm and Roto-Grip, some others call it X-outs but what it boils down to is that they aren't made quite right and the ball companies came up with a way to sell these bowling balls instead of just tossing them. Usually only a pro can get a consistent reaction or a reaction at all out of these balls since their release is so consistent and many have a high rev rate. I don't think they are used by the PBA Tour bowlers often. It takes a lot of work to get it laid out to be legal and to even find a layout that works for them.

I agree with CAL. Its a way to sell balls that would normally be turned down by a Pro Shop to sell to 99% of their customers. If you have a ton of hand and very consistent (like the pros) you can use these balls. But they are not for your basic league bowler, or even your higher level league bowler, IMO.

If these balls were so much better suited for the Pros, do you think they'd be sold more cheaply to the main public? Or do you think if they were so beneficial that the pros themselves would prefer these balls when given a chance?

it is a gamble purchasing a x-out ball. you never know what you will end up with.

Thanks for the info. I had a casual friend of my, who throws a big average, tell me a while ago that these things were the only way to go but something just seemed to set off my Spidey-Sense™. This explanation makes more sense.
