doesn't seem like a particularly heavy volume of oil.. but flat..

should be fun.. Been bowling 23 years and this is my first Nationals.

The real problem with the National pattern is not the oil, but the back end. It is stripped, conditioned and buffed. Any decent revs will hook across the boards. So, the normal play of 10 at the targets and break at 7 hits the 2-4. You have to be adept to cut your hook to play the shot. From 7, your ball comes in at a severe angle and often crashed the head for some really nasty leaves. If you come a board inside of that, your ball will slide farther and not recover.

Also, since you have to be extremely accurate, going cross boards for spares can be a real adventure. Any ball that is targeted to roll through the center oil at a spare will slide off the deck or never turn. Multi-pin shots are cherried. Single pins are just missed. And, don't leave a bucket.

So, the key to spare shooting is Don't leave any.

I would probably have better odds of winning at the slots laugh

I would like to do it one of these days just for the experience.

Last year, I never saw so many premium balls that were sanded to 500 or even 320. Storm sponsored 2 teams rolling next to us and both teams used Virtual Gravities sanded to 320. In a second round set, the lanes are not dressed and are pretty spent. A medium ball, I found, worked the best.

My Raw Anger sanded to 500 or 1000 might work. For me it's a ball that has a gradual arc/walk-in the pocket type reaction. I used it last year on occasion in the PBAx league. I actually shot ten pins with it on the Shark.

Dennis, do you go to this every year or just once in awhile?

Thanks for posting the pattern. Big help! Been curious for several weeks now, and I'm due there in two weeks from today.

Huge round of applause for Dan300 for noticing a minor issue the other day in my approach--2nd step crossed too far over my pushaway throwing alignment off--that's caused me to muss my plastic spare shooting. Now fixed just in time for Nationals.

VFF, I generally go annually. I like Reno, too. But, this year, I can't get away when my regular group wants to go. So, I'll pass.

I've been once. I can't seem to find any people out here that go to that tourny. So the one year that I went, I subbed. The year I went, I didn't have any trouble hooking the ball. I know your supposed to play the lanes straighter at first to break down the lanes properly. Then migrate to the inside part of the lane. Once the lanes broke down, I started playing pretty deep.

I would love to go again. Traveling to Reno during school time is tough. Family and all. It will probably have to stay on hold until my little guy starts school. I thought I would be going to this tourny every year, even as a sub. But plans change.

I've gone to nationals twice and each time I got zero movement in the backend when playing down and in. I moved inside and strung six in the first game for a 233, but I was way out of my comfort zone. I made the stupid mistake of going back outside and shot 146. In fact, in 9 games I had 44 single pin leaves. The ball kept hitting like a marshmellow. I am a lefty and was the only lefty on the pair. A friend mine who is lefty told me to move over the left gutter and fire at the pocket with little or no turn on the ball. Does that sound right? I guess I could give it a try. The only problem is around here no center puts out a pattern with oil on the outsides so it's difficult to practice.

i think firing it over the gutter straight to the pocket is still going to give you less carry then you could get
