We've got plenty of room on our Kegel (un)sport shot league at Edsall/Shirley to practice for next year, Joe. Last week's Rt. 66 played very similar to '10 Nationals albeit 5' longer. Just as flat and ugly, though. Backends weren't stripped either. Have one more week on that before moving onto the "sport" Kegel conditions.

Sorry it didn't happen for you this year. frown

There's many bowlers in my area as well who had a very humbling experience in Reno. Sounds like a tough ugly shot. I don't think I would do well out there either. I'm struggling enough with the animal patterns every week in league.

Anyone who bowls on house shots all year is going to struggle at Nationals. Luckily we had a house out here that put down the Nationals shot for practice the weekend before I went to Reno. It actually played pretty similar, and I was able to shoot 1821 all events, just staying around 13 at the arrows out to around 8-9 at the breakpoint. Anything outside of that was a washout and anything inside was through the beak or Brooklyn. And it seemed there was no advantage to moving outside or inside of that area.

On the more broken down doubles/singles shot, I stayed in the same area but went to a lower friction ball and had decent results.

I bowled in a PBA experience league last summer and fall, along with 2 leagues on a house shot. This summer, I could only sub in the PBAx league because of my work schedule. But, I bowl tournaments weekly (and win/cash) on a variety of shots.

My experience is that, even with the best of intentions in the PBAx league, the shot played differently from lane to lane, pair to pair, and week to week. I should not have been surprised that the lanes in Reno would play differently than those in Las Vegas. I just did not expect them to be inverted. Flat is one thing, inverted is another.

Regardless of a bowler's level of experience, or how much you practice, if you throw a hook and there is more oil outside than inside, you are going to struggle. The bigger the hook, the more axis rotation, the more revs, the greater the struggle is likely to be.

I learned from bowling ABT's a couple years ago, that when conditions are inverted like that, the best adjustment is often to throw the ball straighter and straighter, crossing fewer and fewer boards, until you can reliably hit the pocket, even if that eventually means rolling your plastic spare ball straight up the 17-1/2 board.

The difference is when you are bowling an ABT tournament, you are competing against others bowling the same day on the same condition (hopefully). If everybody else is struggling to shoot 180, then 190 is a winner. With the open tournament, you are competing against bowlers who may have bowled on a more favorable condition.

Don't think that's possible? One of the ABT tournaments I bowled, the lane man only put the ABT shot on half of the lanes. The other lanes had the house shot. Needless to say, the scores were much higher on the house shot. When it became clear what happened, the tournament director's response was essentially "stuff happens". That was the last ABT tournament I bowled, and the local division folded shortly after that. Another example was a league last year where 8 weeks passed before the bowling center realized the lane machine was broken and not applying the oil properly on the left side.

Could something like that happen at the USBC Open? I don't know. What I do know is I went with a group of 15 bowlers, most in the 220-230 range, several of which also bowl PBA experience league and various tournaments. There was nobody close to 800, or 700, and there was only one 600 in the bunch. Everybody who bowled the tournament previous years agreed the shot was especially ugly this year. I guess "stuff happens". I may skip Reno next year.

David Ackerman (62, Lena, IL) had his fingers swell up because of arthritis, which caused a poor performance in team, but, after a new set of grips and trying out different lines, he rattled off a 200-262-226=688 in singles, good for the Classified Singles lead with two weeks left in the tournament.

Michael Adamski (32, Grandview, MO) didn't let a tight back stop him from opening his doubles set yesterday with the 27th 300 game of the tournament. His partner, Tom Patton (Olathe, KS) nearly had one of his own to end the event, but ended with a 278 to help the pair move into 6th in Regular Doubles with 1,462.

Richard Oellrich (34, Margate, FL) followed with #28 on the year to end his singles event.

Going into the last week of the tournament...

Byron Smith (36, Roseburg, OR), the 2003 Masters champion, sandwiched the 29th 300 game of the tournament between games of 237 and 258 Saturday night to move into a tie for 7th place in Regular Singles with a 795 score.

Charles Mayberry Jr. (46, Bellwood, IL) ended his opening game of doubles Sunday morning with a Brooklyn strike for the 30th perfect game of the Open Championships.

As the article says, "As long as there are bowlers on the lanes at the USBC Open Championships, no score on the leaderboard is safe." Case in point: William Gibboney Jr. (33, Douglasville, GA), who rode a 674 doubles set (with 575 in singles and 570 in team) into the Classified All-Events lead with eight days left in the tournament.

Doug Price (46, Loveland, CO) has endured some frustration in his Open Championships career, but ended his 2010 campaign yesterday with the 32nd 300 game of the year.

We are now in the last weekend of the tournament...the last day the team event can be bowled is Sunday, and singles and doubles will wrap up on Monday.
