Hey guys, how many have bowled in a us open qualifier? Have one coming up in Helena in two weeks and I have heard it's flat oil, about 40 feet down? From your experiences don't play the outside I take it? Plus I am a lefty, is it going to be pretty tough due to less ball traffic? I don't like bowling in oily conditions....Should I save my money? $155 enty

Compared to any house pattern yes it's oily. I would do it only for fun with no plans on making any money back. You might get better use out of the $155 getting coaching or a new ball.

I am not a big cranker either...That is what worries me. I need the dry spots for the hook and carry. I know the oiler at a local house and he is going to setup a shot for me similar and see how I do...Thanks guys.

$155 to enter seems very high to me. Local tournaments around here are about $50-80. I actually just played on the US Open pattern this past Sunday. Didnt do that well... 575 Series.

However, I did realize that my Virtual Energy was reacting better than my Virtual Gravity (1000 grit) and NVD (500 grit). It seemed as if my dull equipment just never dug into the lane... I find it hard to believe the balls were burning out? But I guess that is a possibility.

I also need some tips on how to successfully roll on this pattern.

Every bowler on the show in the past few years has played a breakpoint of 10, so I'd start there.

iconz, I'm pretty sure the OP is talking about a qualifier for the actual PBA US Open, hence the price tag.

I have noticed that about the breakpoint. I was thinking like 15 since I am not a huge cranker, I do throw it slow. All the big tourneys around the MT area are around 150 buck entry fee with about 100 participants. Top 32 usually get paid

A breakpoint of 15? You won't get a very good angle at he pocket from there if you even hit the pocket. The pocket is technically around the 17.5 board. Either you will punch through the head pin/cross over or constantly be hitting light. I'd try 10-12 or so, going up the boards and adjust from there. If you get it outside of 10 down lane, don't expect to touch the headpin.

Gotcha. Thanks for the tip! I remember being in a tourney in the same place two months ago, and the second day was pretty oily from board to board and if I did get it to 15 or so it went through the head. I assuming it will be sort of the same next weekend. Thanks!
