1. Get the ball out to my mark
2. Push forward as I step. I have a 4 step approach and usually push off by the 2nd step, but I'm trying to work on pushing the ball forward as I step.

I used to stop when a bowler next to me leaves a split. I usually wait for them to finish the frame, before I step up. I sometimes get zoned in, that I forget what goes around me that it doesn't bother me anymore. Unfortunately, I sometimes step ahead of someone else's approach.

This exact situation cause me to have a discussion with one of my teammates.

We were in a close game. I bowl anchor. Our third bowler stepped up in the 10th before their third and left a pickup. Their third left a split, and our bowler waited for him to finish. Well, I got upset because now, their anchor got up before I did because our third bowler rolled 3 balls in the 10th. Their anchor rolled a first ball strike. Now, I had to bowl knowing that I had to strike to have a chance to win the game. That just placed a little more pressure on me that I didn't appreciate. Had he bowled, I may have gotten up first where my strike would have put more pressure on my opponent.

I did double-9 count, so we won. but, I didn't appreciate a teammate causing me to have the added pressure.

I agree with this 100%. You want to make your 12th shot the same as if were the 3rd shot. This helps with staying in the moment, not the outcome of the final shot.

I never said anything about striking. I haven't said to myself or a teammate we need a strike in years. REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT has to do with making a good shot. I've been bowling long enough to know you don't have 100% control over striking. I've left a solid 9 pins for a 300, as well as knock all ten down, turned around and the head pin has come off the wall and stood back up where the 8 pin belongs for a perfect game. Trust me we have less control over striking then some might think!

For myself...I psych myself out. I don't try to overthink when I'm bowling. I just trust myself (mechanics and such) by not thinking about them. Essentially my mind is blank, except for knowing what board I want to throw to (break point) and just let it rip. I'm a very quick bowler...I personally think many bowlers are hurting themselves and overthinking when they just stand there concentrating. I've tried it and I bowl worse.

I agree 100%!! I think all you wind up doing is thinking yourself out of the shot.. The more I think about it the higher average bowlers I know, and most professionals don't take much time either.

The first time I had 10 in a row, I turned around and realized the entire house was watching me. My knees went to jelly and I left the 1-2-4-7.

So, the next time it happened, I didn't turn around at all. Just focused on making a good shot for each ball in the 10th. And it worked. I got my 300.

That was smart, all I do is back up without turning around.

Great advice. I've made a note. I started with 8 strikes in a row twice, then noticed the players on the next lane were aware, bowled one more strike, then crumbled. Bummer.

Where I bowl league, 300's have become common enough that the people on the lane next to you might not even even stop and notice when you have the first 9. Even so, I don't turn around to check to see who is watching. It's not something I normally do. So, I don't do it when I have a chance at an honor score.

That's the key. Stick to your normal routine. Pressure is something you create in your own mind and put on yourself. It is not something that anybody can put on you, nor is it created by circumstances. So, don't create it and you will be able to bowl free of pressure under any circumstance.
