In a word, No. It requires the wrist to be able to break back some after the thumb clears the ball to allow the fingers to drive through the ball.

You have to have freedom of movement to bend the wrist in both directions. When done by Chris Barnes circa 2002, he would enter the release faze with the wrist bent forward, then it would straighten and bend slightly backwards, then it would bend forward again as he applied spin over the top of the ball.

At any rate, that's what it looked like to me in the blurry images of that day.

Today's bowling shows have much improved slow mo, and I see that Chris does the "waggle the wrist" movement that seems so popular these days, as explained on Ron Clifton's site as "the bowler's release". Also, Chris doesn't cup the wrist as much as before.
