Stuart,
I can relate. I have also seen a coach this summer, and I am really excited to begin the season next week on the 10th. In practice, so far so good...over 200 every game, but I need to carry that over into the season. Good Luck to you next league night.

Went bowling to practice yesterday, bowled an 82, 127, 110 for a 319 series. I wasn't bowling for score but had a hard time not being disappointed with that nonetheless. I'm working on my approach, I had been using 6 or 7 steps and planting, and I am changing to a smooth stroke style with a 4 step approach with a slide at the end.

I am a new bowler, started just over 3 weeks ago, but I'm determined that I'm going to get this game if it kills me. For now, I just want get my average up up up. Hopefully I can get a coach at some point for a couple of lessons, but I live over an hour from the nearest one so that is out of the question for now.

In the end, I just have so much damn fun chunking the 15 pound ball. This sport is incredibly addicting.

also practiced yesterday, one gave of ten pin practice and two games of practicing a new line (20 at the line, 15 at the arrows) to get used to it, since i switched to it last week on the first night of the league. left a couple of splits, but not really a big deal since it was practice. after each split i had a strike so i was making my adjustments pretty well. also used the splits to practice my ten pin shots, so i had the whole last game plus 4 or 5 shots in the others. only missed one ten pin in the last game and covered all the other ones, for between 92% and 93% covering ten pins, which is a lot better than i have been in the past on ten pins. buying the new spare ball over the summer is paying its dividends already.

Last week was my first night of adult league action, as i aged out of the junior leagues. First frame i left the 2-4-5 and only hit the 4, and doubled after a spare, but then threw the ball into the gutter on the double. probably just nerves, but i took some time to myself and came back to win the point that game with a 181. 193 the next game, which lost to a 205, but covered a 3-9-10 that game, that got me in the groove. final game i had either 8 or 9 strikes, plus i covered the 2-4-10 for a 234, and won that point too.

Tonight is the second night, hopefully my practice was useful yesterday.

Steelballa,

You really need to see a coach, if not now,..in the near future. The next best thing to do is read. Read all you can on bowling in instructional bowling books like "Bowling Execution" by John Jowdy,..or "Bowling Fundamentals" by Michlle Mullen and try to do some of the things they speak about, and familiarize yourself with some of the terms and techniques in the books. That way when you eventually see a coach, you will be somewhat familiar with some of the terms your coach talks about..it won't sound so foriegn to you..you'll have a leg up so to speak.

But nothing can substitute a lesson with a good coach, if you are serious, thats really the only way to go.
Good Luck!

Wed. night, first night of fall league, I shot 168-203-246. Started off with Storm HyRoad which jumped brooklyn midway through the 1st game. Switched to my Big B Fury Pearl and good decent response until the 6th frame when by shots started going through the headpin. I then switched to rolling my Rotogrip Neptune. The Neptune was the ideal ball for me on this dry lane condition. All in all, a decent night with a 617 series.

Tim,

I definitely want to get a coach to teach me the proper fundamentals. My best game/series was with a house ball, since getting my own ball and beginning to use a correct approach I have actually noticed my scores dropping. That's a pretty good indicator that I probably have a lot of fundamental flaws and errors in my throw.

As I said I won't be able to get a coach soon because I live more than 100 miles from the nearest one, but in a couple of months I definitely want to do that... Until then, I'll just have fun with it and try not to be wrapped in the scores. smile

well after my terrible play and seeing myself for the first time on film and being disappointed with how bad my form was last thursday (see my other thread). i finally got back to the lanes and we went to a house that we never went to before (for the cheap game prices).
the first 2 games i was working on 10 pin spares and then a little on 7s and then finished off trying to read the oil.
3rd game i realized my ball was hooking too much and reaching the other side everytime so i made an adjustment that i have never made before because i wasnt comfortable enough in my skill to try it. i stepped one dot to the left and aimed for my same target which is 2 arrow and low and behold here come the strikes. i rolled off 6 strikes in a row from 5th frame to 10th and choked on the 7th attempt probably because of my over excitement! but finished with 1 open frame and a 231 for my best score ever.
next game i started off with a strike so i was looking forward to doing well again and i was thrown off my next throw from very loud bowlers a few lanes down and i just couldnt get back into the rhythm but the next 2 games were pretty low but around my avg 167 and 154 so my best 3 game series of 552, of course not in league play yet, still in the learning process and i start league on wednesday so wish me luck. and i promise these posts will get shorter as i progress and get better LOL
